Tex and Shirley's in Greensboro, North Carolina - Not Worth the Time

Kay Sharpe
Tex & Shirley's has been a Greensboro, NC icon since 1972. They began at Friendly Center and have since expanded to a second location on Wendover Avenue (which is technically in High Point, but most folks consider that corner of the world to still be Greensboro.)

When I first moved to Greensboro in 1997, I ate at Tex and Shirley's often. My family really enjoys breakfast at dinner time, so we liked to go to Tex and Shirley's. They had the best pancakes I'd ever had, served with a smile by the friendly wait staff.

During the spring of 2005 we had our first bad experience. We'd eaten regularly at Tex and Shirley's for a number of years - we were very aware of the culture and policies of the restaurant. My daughter ordered a coke to drink. She finished it before dinner even arrived - as kids will do. When we asked for a refill, we were informed that we'd have to pay for it. That had never happened before. The waitress was extremely rude and unfriendly about it, so we asked to speak to the manager. He was equally rude, and basically told us if we weren't willing to pay for each refill on sodas, we could get out. We did - and ate elsewhere that night. In fact, it was at one of the hundreds and hundreds of restaurants in Greensboro that offer free refills.

We did try again a few months later. The happy servers we'd always seen before were gone. The people there were cold and distant at best. The food was mediocre and one of our plates was cold. And again, we were charged for every refill.

My family voted to never go back - Greensboro has plenty of restaurants!

When Tex and Shirley's opened a new location off Wendover Avenue, we decided to give them another try. We've eaten there twice, and both times we had problems.

The first time, I'd ordered something very specific and when it came from the kitchen, it was all wrong (despite detailed instructions to the waitress). Because the specificity was due to food allergies, I asked to speak to the manager. (I'm a firm believer that restaurants should make every effort to assist people with food allergies). He didn't care - and would not send the food back to the kitchen. Nor would he give us any consideration on the bill.

Months later, we decided to try them "one last time" - and it was, indeed, the last. We ordered omelets. We've eaten at countless restaurants where the ingredient list leaves off "the obvious" - eggs and cheese. A Denver is ALWAYS listed as ham, eggs, and green pepper...even though it also has egg and cheese. An asparagus omelet's ingredients would be listed on the menu as asparagus - not asparagus and cheese. We'd never seen it otherwise. So when Tex and Shirley's served us cheeseless omelets, we assumed there must be a mistake. "No mistake!" said our waitress. It turns out that cheese is available on omelets - at nearly a dollar. We argued that cheese belongs on omelets. She took the plates back, sprinkled them with cheese, and returned them to us. Our bill had a dollar apiece added to the price. We spoke with the manager again, and he just grunted that omelets don't come with cheese anywhere in the universe.

We paid with a note about duress instead of a signature on the credit card slip.

It's no wonder that they're never busy, and that the servers all appear unhappy - their policies are making the customers unhappy! While Tex and Shirley's used to be a favorite restaurant for many Greensboro natives and visitors, now it's just a shadow of its former self - not worth the time, not worth the money.

Ummmm. A cheese omelet is a plain omelet (interesting that I've never seen a plain, cheeseless omelette on the menu)... T&S has fallen from a high, high spot. I ate at their other location one evening (an event was meeting there)... the food and the waitstaff were simply sorry. I was very disappointed and had hoped that management might correct the issues based on this review, but it seems like they'd rather have employees come and be nasty in the comments section of this article, instead.

This woman is clearly mistaken. If cheese comes on all omelets, why do most restaurants list a cheese omelet on their menus? Look up "omelet" in the dictionary. This is the internet at it's worst. Some deranged broad posting something that she is wrong about. I'm sure that the employees and customers at T&S are delighted that you have taken your business elsewhere. Lifes tough enough without morons like you!!

I have eaten breakfast at a lot of restaurants and omelets always come with cheese. At Tex and Shirleys was the first encounter I had with the no cheese unless you ask for it and pay extra. I also found the manager (which is the owner's son) to be very rude and didn't care if I ever came back. Well I haven't and continue to get omelets everywhere else that come with cheese without asking and extra charges. Tex and Shirleys that we all knew and loved from the 70s and 80s is GONE! The new owners are running the place in the ground.

Donna, which location did you go to? Just curious. The one at Friendly Center is better by far - but I still won't eat there because their staff is rude. I've been there over the years all time of the day or night and ... well... I won't go back.

Usually I eat in the evenings, so your breakfast waitress comment is way off. But besides - if someone's hired to do a job, are they entitled to be jerks if they feel they don't get paid enough? That's good, that's really good.

As for my experiences, they're posted solely so that readers can make an informed decision. And many have - I've talked to a lot of people locally who, based on this review and the experiences of others (which are numerous - it's not like I'm the lone voice crying out in the wilderness on this one)... lots of people won't even BOTHER going there.

So I guess it's reached "dive" status - most dives have a cadre of people willing to be abused and willing to eat bad food... but most folks just stay away.

I am so sorry that this site is the Tex & Shirley's haters club!! We have been going to T&S for 15 years - almost every Saturday. The staff is friendly, we know many of them on a first name basis and get hugs sometimes! Our food isn't right every single time - no restaurant can guarantee that - but the waitstaff always makes it right. Breakfast waitresses are the busiest and most underpaid employees around. Please try a little kindness. And consider that you may have gone on an off day. The employees have watched our daughters grow up and truly care. The food is still the best breakfast menu in town. Please DON'T go back if you are this unhappy. Apparently, your poor experiences aren't hurting this wonderful local restaurant's business one bit.

I just ate at Tex & Shirley's and it was a horrible experience. We had the majority of our orders be incorrect and there was also fecal matter (i.e. stinky) in the floor. Their staff was unaware so my wife pointed it out to them. I called to explain to the manager Gilbert Jones about the issue and he made sure to make it clear that the mistaken orders were my fault and that I was inaccurate in my assessement of the concerns. He spent more time being defensive and harping on the fact that I did not complain in front of everyone while there. I personally choose to address my concerns over the phone and in privacy (until after the way I was treated over the phone). I can totally understand that a person who was there had an emergency and the accident happened. But why did it take them so long to respond and cover it up seeing as that he presented it as if the staff was aware of the situation and took care of it immediately. When my wife pointed it out to the person that cleaned it up, he

What on Earth is this Kathi person raving about? I've eaten at Tex and Shirley's since it opened, including several visits to the newer location.

The food remains excellent, with larger portions than is the norm at most breakfast places of comparable price. The service is as it always has been. I've never been charged for a refill on anything.

On what planet does cheese come by default with omelets? You can order an omelet. You can order a cheese omelet. You can order many types of omelets, some of which come with cheese (and so state), some of which don't, but to which cheese can always be added. Unless the menu describes a specific omelet as containing cheese, you must order cheese to get cheese as an ingredient in your omelet. This has been the case in every restaurant in which I've ever eaten.

Pay no attention to this bizarre, misinformed and misleading review. Eat at Tex and Shirley's, either location, without fear of poor treatment.
