Texas A&M Aggies Football All-Time Team

David Funk
Texas A&M has had a storied history in college football. The Aggies tradition includes being "the home of the 12th Man" and the Aggie Bonfire that takes place every season. All in all, Texas A&M has stood proud in their home state, and has produced many players who went on to successful lives and professional football careers. Here is my Texas A&M all-time team.

Note: Players had to play at least two seasons at their college to make the list.

Quarterback

Bucky Richardson(1988-1991): Though he was known for his running ability, Richardson was plenty good enough as passer. He finished tenth in the Heisman Trophy voting in 1991, and led the Aggies to three bowl games while there.

Backups: Mark Farris(1999-2002), Reggie McNeal(2001-04)

Running Backs

John David Crow(1955-57): As the only Heisman Trophy winner in Texas A&M history, Crow is an obvious choice here. Crow could run the 100-yard dash in under ten seconds, and the Aggies went 24-5-2 while he was in school.

John Kimbrough(1937-40): As a fullback, Kimbrough finished second in the Heisman Trophy voting in 1940, and helped the Aggies to an undefeated national title season in 1939.

Backups: Jack Pardee(1954-56), Joe Utay(1905-07), Leeland McElroy(1992-95), Joel Hunt(1925-27)

Wide Receivers

Bethel Johnson(1999-2002): Johnson is the school's all-time leader in receptions(117), receiving yards(1,740), receiving touchdowns(11). He is one of the fastest football players to play at both the collegiate and pro level.

Robert Ferguson(1997-2000): Ferguson was a great receiver for the Aggies, and finished his career with 111 receptions, 1,546 receiving yards, and 11 touchdowns.

Backups: Bobby Joe Conrad(1954-57), Gerald Carter(1976-79), Terrence Murphy(2001-04)

Tight End

Dan Campbell(1995-98): Although he did play some wide receiver at Texas A&M, Campbell spent most of his tenure there as a tight end. He was a solid blocker in the running game as well.

Backup: Greg Schorp(1991-93)

Offensive Line

Charlie Krueger(1955-57): Krueger was one of the reasons that John David Crow won the Heisman Trophy in 1957 because of his outstanding blocking. The two-time All-American tackle was inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame in 1983 for his efforts.

Seth McKinney(1998-2001): McKinney is only one of five players in NCAA Division 1-A history to start every game of his college career at center. He started in 50 consecutive games in his career as an Aggie.

Richmond Webb(1986-89): Though he was known for his Pro Bowl play with the Miami Dolphins in the 1990s, Webb was a great offensive tackle for Texas A&M.

Mo Moorman(1964-67): Moorman played guard for Texas A&M, and later helped the Kansas City Chiefs to a Super Bowl win in 1970.

Joe Routt(1935-37): Routt was great guard on those solid Aggie teams in the 1930s. He was inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame in 1962.

Backups: Rex Tucker(1994-97), Geoff Hangartner(2001-04), Taylor Whitley(1999-2002)

Defensive Line

Sam Adams(1990-93): The mammoth Adams was the anchor in the middle of some strong Aggie defenses in the early 1990s as a defensive tackle.

Ty Warren(1999-2002): Warren recorded thirteen career sacks at defensive end for the Aggies, and even blocked two kicks during his time there. His play has carried over to the NFL and he has helped the Patriots to remain a top team in the league.

Ray Childress(1981-84): Childress was a two-time All-American at defensive tackle for the Aggies, and is fifth all-time in school history in both tackles and sacks.

Jacob Green(1976-79): Green finished his career at Texas A&M with All-American honors at defensive end. He was also a finalist for the Lombardi Award during his senior season.

Backups: Pat Williams(1993-96), Ron Edwards(1997-2000), Brandon Mitchell(1993-96)

Linebackers

Dat Nguyen(1995-98): Nguyen made the most of his small frame at the collegiate and NFL level. He won the Bednarik Award as the nation's defensive player of the year in 1998.

Johnny Holland(1984-86): After playing three years at Texas A&M, Holland left school as their all-time leading tackler which was broken by Nguyen.

Aaron Wallace(1986-89): Wallace was an All-American linebacker in 1989, and a finalist for the Butkus Award as well.

Backups: Warrick Holdman(1994-98), Reggie Brown(1992-95), Quentin Coryatt(1989-1991)

Secondary

Aaron Glenn(1992-93): Even though he played only two seasons at Texas A&M, Glenn made the most of them. He was an all-conference pick as well as an All-American pick in his two years as an Aggie.

Lester Hayes(1973-76): Yes, Hayes would become known as great cornerback in the NFL, but he was an All-American safety at Texas A&M.

David Elmendorf(1968-1970): Elmendorf was an All-American safety for Texas A&M in 1970, and a special teams standout as well. His play as an Aggie earned him an induction into the College Football Hall of Fame in 1997.

Kevin Smith(1988-1991): Smith was a great lock-down cornerback at Texas A&M who later was part of the Dallas Cowboy teams that won three Super Bowls in 1990s.

Backups: Ray Mickens(1992-95), Jason Webster(1996-99), Jeff Fuller(1980-83)

Kicker

Tony Franklin(1975-78): Franklin was a two-time All-American kicker in both 1976 and 1978. He once kicked a 64-yard field goal during a game, and finished his career as the all-time leader in field goals made(56) and scoring(291 points).

Punter

Shane Lechler(1996-99): Even though he is the all-time leader in punting average at the NFL level, Lechler was just as good at Texas A&M. He also wrote a paper in school on how to properly kick a football, too.

Kickoff/Punt Returner

Dante Hall(1996-99): Hall played running back at Texas A&M, but it was his outstanding play as a kickoff/punt returner that garnered him the most attention. He is now considered one of the best special team performers in NFL history.

That is my Texas A&M all-time team. The Aggies have had many solid defensive players make an impact at the pro level, and have a long list of running backs that excelled in college, too. Their special teams players on this team are about as good as you will find.
