According to the local police who entered the residence, the place was filled with the rotting stench of something dead. All rooms were in deplorable conditions. several cats were residing there along with Linda Sue Sainz. Officers assumed she was dead, laying motionless on the bed until eye movement was seen.
An ambulance was immediately summoned and transported Sainz to the Mainland Hospital in La Marque, Texas. She suffered from back sores which were infested with maggots. What previous conditions were existent to lead her to this point are currently unknown. As of December 3, she is reported to survive the ordeal with more information to be released.
Police were made aware after receiving a 911 call. It is assumed that it was her adult son and police are looking for him now. According to other family members, who claim no contact with their mother, He was living with her and responsible for her well being.
Cases of elder neglect in Galveston County have doubled in the past year. This is one example. Linda Sainz is only 62 years of age. She is a retired dispatch officer for the Galveston County Sheriff's Department. Known for their zealousness when fellow officers are concerned, I hope they will use that same zeal to find her son and help their fellow officer in her time of need.
I have had the good fortune of knowing this woman during the late 1970's. She was associated with one of my uncles at the time. She also worked with me at Allen's Food King located in Dickinson, Texas. I can definitely say she was a very good person, woman and mother. She was an extremely good friend of the family in times of need. But, people lose touch sometimes and such has happened over the past twenty years or so.
On that fateful day that I spied the news report, I did not believe this was her. Diligently I perused the internet for information. To my sadness I found it to be true. To my horror I found it to be true. I have so many questions as to why her son would abandon her as he did. What was he thinking?
Currently, and for the past 10 years since my father's death, my mother has been residing with me. Yes, it is difficult and the situation has literally cost me so much. It has even cost me the luxury of living my own life. That is, however, no concern. I was brought up to believe in family, honor, respect, loyalty and duty. These are the things found lacking in our society today. How can we ask for things to be better if we don't have these fundamentals in our life?
Que sera, sera. I only hope it can get better and I will try to help to that end.
