Texas Death Row Inmate, Rob Will, Sends Public Letter of Sorrow About Friend Who Committed Suicide, Jesus Flores

Dee
Robert Will, an inmate on Texas death row, has written a public letter about the suicide of his close friend Jesus Flores. Flores was found in his cell with his throat slashed on Tuesday, January 29. More about his suicide can be read here

Will expressed his sadness over the loss of what he called his close personal friend. The letter titled "A Close Friend Committed Suicide Yesterday" was written from his death row cell and sent to supporters of his, to be posted publicly. Will is a long time member of an online prison group called DRIVE.(Death-Row Inner Communalist Vanguard Engagement) and artist of the groups logo. It consists of a group of nonviolent death row inmates who are active in prison abuse issues. Will has written other articles about his concerns on the conditions of death row.

In his heart felt letter Will states that he and Flores had spoken many times about Flores case, and how Flores always expressed deep remorse for the "heat of the moment" murder he committed of a Texas sheriff's deputy.

Will speaks about when he and Flores were in county jail before death row, where they had more freedom, and how one morning he found Flores "on his knees, in front of his desk, praying and crying. There was a cross drawn on his wall with the name of the deputy he killed written across it". Will claims Flores had tears in his eyes, and he realized Flores had been praying at the handmade alter he made. Will states that Flores told him "Man, I feel bad about that, you know, about the deputy..."

The letter in its entirety can be read on the DRIVE site.

The Houston Chronicle has reported that wife of the murdered deputy, Renee Dennis commented that she felt bad for the Flores family, "because it must be hard losing a son", and that Flores death didn't bring her any comfort.

You seem to be a "voice", and few people ever achieve this. Well done!

Excellent article. You are very courageous in discussing about death-row prisoners. I am personally against the death penalty.

I commend you Dee on your passion and involvement with this prisoners. As you know my son is in prison and it is horrible. Funny the rich get off and the poor end up being executed for the same crimes. My son was devastated over the suicide of a friend who was in the cell above him. I should say the cage above his. I am sure or I hope that your involvement makes a difference.

mwtsaginaw, I Like you but your statement, "To me, a suicide on death row is the same as if the person had been capitally punished. Another homicide on the part of a system that calls itself punishing homicide. -- Mike," sounds a little off base. We can't always stop a person from committing suicide. If we could we would. If the system knows in advance that a person is suicidal, they will put him on watch and give him a Doctor to work with. Sadly, we are caught off guard sometimes. If a person truly wants to kill themselves they seldom announce it first. Just think about the parent that has a child who kills their self. Do you blame the parent when the child showed no outward signs? Do you see what I'm getting at?

icon, Thanks, I spend so much time writing to these inmates, and reserching, and in the 30+ prison groups I belong to, it's a great part of my life. I think it always will be.
