Texas Gives Execution Date to Man Who Never Pulled the Trigger

Jeff Woods and the Texas "Law of Parties"

Dee
Texas has issued a death warrent to a man who they know never killed anyone. Jeff Woods will be executed by the state of Texas on August 21, 2008. Another man, Wood's co-defendant Daniel Earl Reneau was executed in 2002 for the crime.

In an attempt to save her brothers life, Wood's sister Terri Bean has created a website including facts and information about the case. Other members of his family including his father, wife, sterpmother, daughter, brothers and nephews have have all spoken out about Wood's innocence. Friends of Jeff have written on his behalf also.

Wood's along with co-defendant Reneau were convicted for the robbery and murder of a gas station attendant, Kris Keeran in 1996. According to the website, Wood's was outside when the shooting took place, and never touched the gun. When he heard the shot, he then "looked in the window," "he ran inside, to where his codefendant was and was ordered to get the surveillance tape and drive the car."

The website explains about other outstanding facts in this case including his rights being infringed, and his mental capacities. More information can be read here. A petition is circulating the Internet to be presented to Texas officials on his behalf, and members of his family urge everyone to sign it. The petition can be found on the website also. It currently has over 500 signatures, but needs many more.

Although Texas knows that Woods did not pull the trigger, did not murder anyone, he was convicted under what they call "The law of parties." A law that states you can be convicted of a crime for just being present at the crime. A law of "association." Texas is the only state with this law, and currently on Texas death row over 80 men wait their turn to die by lethal injection. Over 80 men innocent of murder.

Texas is already the "killing state" and executes more inmates than any other state in the nation. The death penalty is not reserved for heinous crimes anymore. Please help Wood's and his family by signing the petition and calling the board of parole and pardons, and also phoning or emailing the Governor of Texas and ask them to grant a commutation of sentence for Jeff Wood's, a man who never touched the murder weapon. One man has already been executed for this crime, the man who did pull the trigger.

I found Dee on a site we both are members of. I have a husband serving 2 consecutive life sentences. I am big believer in DNA and I see now being new Texas, they will spend that under a 100.00 for LI, to put to kill a person. Some people admits their guilty but today when someone tries to stand up and keeps saying I didn't do it, they will not spend any funds on test DNA they rather kill a person than to spend the funds to save a persons life. Hell Texas sure isn't a state to admit they are WRONG>
I plan to attend in Huntsville and if Terri you need some support please contact me. I am more than willing to help in any way I can. Make sure I get his address and I have people whom are willing to help and write letters to ANYONE. Just ask I will help.

Jeff Wood is a good man and he awaits the death penalty for a muder he did not commit! (...The murder of HIS FRIEND Kris.) Please look at the petition that is circulating...even Kris' family knows Jeff did not do it. The actual killer in this case was executed in Texas in 2002.

Please help save the life of my brother! Signing the petition is only the first step. We need letters to be written to the Governor, we need phone calls, we need faxes, and we need people to protest with us in Austin several times in August before his execution date, and people in Huntsville on the actual date. There is power in numbers! We just need people to care about their "neighbor" and to do the right thing!

Thank you again, for your help!

Your story collection has caught my eye. I'm reporter for a newspaper and my beat includes the county jail. Like most we have an overcrowding problem and the jail is in bad shape. We have had a total of 6 inmates escape in a one year period. And the court system is another mess. Look forward to reading your articles in my spare time.

California has the same law. I have never agreed with it. You can never know what someone else is going to do. This is so sad. I do not support the death penalty for any reason. The death penalty simply means the another murder is being committed. (By the state) I hope the governor will stay his execution. I wonder how many citizens truly believe in the death penalty? What a sad society we have become.

Dee...thanks for calling attention to your spot... I am also interested in criminal law matters but have a much different perspective on it. However, it's always good to consider other points of view aside from one's own, so I've added you to my "favorites."

What is wrong with these people???? I'll be praying for Jeff.
