The Texas coast of the Gulf of Mexico has it all. You can visit miles of beaches, beaches to Nature preserves where you can see a wide variety of birds. There is a wide diversity of towns and cities on the gulf coast. There are small coastal fishing towns to large metropolitan areas providing plenty of entertainment. About 30-45 minutes inland from Galveston, you can reach the Houston Space Center or one of the best children's museums in the country.
Beaches
Texas beaches are considered public highways and therefore all vehicles on them must be street-legal and licensed. While you can't drive your home made non licensed dune buggy on the beach, you can often drive a licensed Motorhome or passenger vehicle to remote parts of the beach. Just pay very close attention not to pass 4x4 only signs. We accidently went past one with a Ford Conversion van and ended up driving through soft sand beaches for a few miles until we found a place to turn off.
If you decide to camp on the Gulf coast many of the campsites have easy beach access. They may not always have a beach view though. This is due to the dunes that usually separate the beach from the camping areas. This is to help with erosion. There is just about any kind of camping on the beach from remote beach sites, to paved RV paradises.
Treasure hunting on the Texas Gulf Coast Beaches.
The way the Gulf of Mexico is situated with ocean currents it brings in a lot of stuff from the ocean. There is often a lot of trash and debris deposited on its beaches. While this is unfortunate that much of the debris is manmade, you can find a lot of interesting things from around the world here. We have found bottles with a different all sorts of languages on them. Nuts and seeds from around the world also wash up on the shore. In this case the saying is true; one man's trash is another man's treasure. Despite the trash, they do a good job of keeping the beaches clean and there are trash cans where you can deposit these items.
Whether it's a beach vacation you are looking for, culture or big city adventure, the Texas Gulf Coast has a lot to offer.
