Persistence pay off for the Chapparals

Rebounding from some minor setback in the 2006 campaign, the Chaparrals look to reinsert themselves atop the division in 2007.

The Austin Westlake program faced some minor setbacks in the 2006 season, but they were able to rally and finish strong, posting a respectable 12-3-1 record and losing to the mighty Southlake Carroll in the state finals. This year, the Chaparrals lost took reinsert themselves and take back their division as they are set to make yet another state championship run.

The biggest blow that Austin Westlake took this off season was losing former starting quarterback Nick Foles to Michigan State. However, senior Walker Kobelan seems to be the leading candidate to take over. Junior Ryan Swope is set to take over the tailback duties, and while both Swope and Kobelan appear to be talented enough to handle the starting duties, their inexperience is a concern and may hurt Austin Westlake down the stretch. However that lack of significant playing time may be countered by the returning offensive line. Senior offensive lineman Forrest Justice, Ross Cooper and Spencer Kainz return, and will likely provide and solid line to back up Kobelan and Swope.

While two key components of the Austin Westlake offense are virtually untested, the Chaparrals can rely on their experience and talents defensive unit to keep them in games should the offense falter. Senior linebacker Mike Joyce, senior defensive lineman Mark Daniel, and defensive back Justin Tucker are all returning starters and will provide experience and stability on the defensive side of the ball. Tucker pulls double duty as kicker and is widely regarded as one of the best in the state.

After some doubts arose about their ability to remain a top program surfaced during the last season, the Chaparrals were able to rise to the occasion and silence the critics. With a strong enough core of experience leaders to remain a force in their division. The only question marks surround the untested backfield, but with enough will, grit, and persistence, the Chaparrals should be able to overcome any setbacks the may face and make another strong showing in the 2007 season.
