Texas High School Football 2007 Preview: Katy

Buckeye Man
Last year the Katy Tigers advanced to the state quarterfinals in impressive fashion as they outscored their opponents 33-8. The tigers accomplished this with mostly junior and sophomores at starting positions, and used a total of 22 rotating starters throughout the season. This year many of those starters return to form the core of what should be a very impressive and successful unit for the 2007 season

The offense, which now has considerable experience under its belt, will be lead primarily by two men. Senior quarterback Bo Levi Mitchell and senior running back Aundre Dean will provide the experience and skill in the Tiger's backfield. Dean, who has already committed to UCLA, broke a single season scoring record last year and gained over 2,000 yards in the process. Mitchell made significant strides as a signal caller last year and his strong arm and ability to scramble will be featured in his role in the backfield.

The offensive line has grown in size to accompany their growing experience. Seniors Eric Ball and Nate Bryan made first team all-district last year and will anchor the offensive line come fall.

To accompany a potent rushing attack, the tigers have a wealth of talent at wide receiver as well. Seniors Brian Rowe, Terrance Avie, Joey Fuda and Ryan Doerr all have spent considerable time running with the first team. The experienced offense is rounded out by returning tight end Markham Stayton and fullback Luis Zavala.

Even with all that experience on the offensive side of the ball, the most experienced part of the Tigers is their defensive backfield, returning three out of four starters. Seniors Trent Hunter, Terrance Henry and Terrence Frederick all earned all district honors in the '06 season and look to continue their success. Like the rest of their team, the Tigers linebacking unit features players who all gained invaluable experience and playing time last year, and should show considerable improvement because of it. If the few new starters which Katy will employ can step up into their roles, the Tiger defense should improve over and already impressive performance in 2006.

The goal of the Katy Tigers, like all teams, is to win championships. This tiger team seems well equipped to do so. Having experience on all sides of the ball and at all positions should take the Tigers well into the post season and possibly grant them a shot at the championship that they covet.
