Start off by visiting a one of a kind museum. Texas Military Forces Museum, located in Camp Mabry, Austin Texas, is the only one in the United States devoted to the military forces of Texas. They offer a large range of exhibits that include but not limited to the Texas Revolution, War Between the States, Captured Enemy Equipment, Weapons Display and Vietnam War.
While in Austin don't forget to step over to the Confederate Soldiers Monument. In 1903 five bronze figures were erected on gray granite bases. These figures represent the five parts of the Confederate Military. These five parts were the Infantry, Cavalry, Navy and the Artillery. The base has the thirteen states that had succeed from the union carved into it, along with the battles that were fought between 1861 and 1865. Make sure you have plenty of film to capture this beautiful monument that depicts so much of Texas early history.
Houston, Texas was sure to not be left out as they have one of the most informative and historical museums around. Once you hit Houston make sure to stop by the Buffalo Soldiers National Museum. This museum gives honor to the brave men of color who were at time the first black military soldiers. The Buffalo Soldiers National Museum has conducted and made sure to preserve interviews with the last Buffalo Soldiers alive. After visiting this museum you will walk away with a true understanding of what it was like to be a Buffalo Soldier.
Did you know that San Antonio, Texas is considered the birthplace of American military aviation? If you want to know why it is considered to be the birthplace, then make sure to stop and check out the Texas Air Museum located in San Antonio, Texas. On exhibit is a wide array of aircrafts, weapons and even uniforms from military history. While there be sure to check out their exhibit of a very rare Focke-Wulf 190 and the vintage Waco 10.
These were just to name a few of the wonderful museums that you will find in Texas. There are many more museums and monuments scattered all over the great state of Texas. Take the time even to get off the beaten path and visit the battlefields that are littered across Texas' beautiful landscape.
