Texas Rapper Mike Jones

Mike Jones Comes Through with His Debut Album, and It's Hot!

Tim Herzer

From the mean streets of Houston, Texas comes a fast spitting, hustler with a mouth full of bling. Mike Jones' drops his
major label debut, and it's hot! His two singles have been blowing up on radio stations for months, and with this album the streets will be filled with Mike Jone's chants in no time.

This album starts off with his second single 'Back Then'
How could anybody deny this hot beat? The synth is catchy, and the bass and drums blare. This song definitly gets a club popping. This song is typical of Jones with shameless self-promotion and clever rhymes. He asserts in this song that women thought he was a chump, and a loser until he got paid. Then even the same ones who said he was just too damn chubby where beggin Jones to pull down their panties. Point well taken.

'Flossin' is a song you can play for your girl. She'll appreciate the smooth R&B style, and you'll appreciate how Mike Jones' voice gets your girl to grind up on you. Thank Jones later.

His Third song off the album was his first radio single, 'Still Tippin'
This song features Slim Thug on the hook and first verse, and fellow Swisha House member Paul Wall.

The beat is so hot, the violin makes you want to tear a lane up. Jones' flow again expresses the fact he got no attention from the ladies when he was broke with the line 'Back Then, hoe's didn't want me, Now I'm hot Hoe's all me.'
Paul Wall lends his smooth texan flow to this song, and I think he makes the song shine. This is a definite banger.

'Got it Sewed up (Remix)' is a hard driving song with a killer piano hook that leaves you on the edge of your seat. There's
Also a cool voice sample of Mike Jones' name. This is the first time on the album he gives out his cell phone number, but
assured, it won't be the last. This song is great to chill to, and to bump while cruising down the block.

Another slow song on here. The Guitar rips while the hook proclaims ' I can't stand these scandalous hoe's'
The beat is pretty good, for a slow song from texas it's not half bad. Aside from the beat, the lyrics are brutally honest to the
females in his life. Jones speaks about the mind games that hoes play to try to get to his newly earned money. He isn't standing for any of that. This is the kind of song that grows on you. By the fourth listen, you'll love it. Unless you're a
scandalous hoe.

Another banger on this album is a song called 'Screw Dat'
Great beat. Blends screwed up qualities but keeps a quick pace with the high hats. Mike Jones' flow again goes great with
the fast beat. The Texas flow goes very well with this kind of bubbly jam.

An even quicker song comes on after that called 'Turning Lane'
Good beat that evokes images of very fast cars and damage about to be done. High Pitched Piano mixes in and out with
a medium pitched organ, along with chorus hits. The only negative thing about this song is the annoying song structure. He
has 4 bars followed by a 'In the Turnin Lane!' If he only used this structure for the chorus it would be a badass song. But he
keeps it the whole 4 minutes. A lot of Turning lanes. Almost too much.

He keeps on mixing it up, and again, puts a slow jam.
The high hats are going crazy on this track. And the high pitched synths go along perfect with the beat. Great music that
makes you get up and go nuts. Jones' flow once again is furious, just ripping this track to pieces. The hook is catchy too
with a bit of an R&B vibe.

Jones' keeps it at that ballad pace, with another slow jam entitled '5 years from now'
This joint asks the question where will Jones be in 5 years. The hook is delivered smooth, as one would expect with a song
with organ grooves and funky drum hats. Jones asks many questions. Only time will tell the answer to all of his questions.
But his delivery is thoughtful, and almost emotional, until he starts in with the 'Mike Jones' chants. Great song all in all.

Just when you thought yodeling was dead, Jones' has a killer song called 'Cuttin (Remix)' that features yodeling on the hook.
This beat is just sick. Complete with an great organ and synth part, and super funky bass riff. One of the better songs on
the album. Beat is very catchy.

'What ya know about' is a dark and devious beat and features Paul Wall again. This beat has a low piano that makes you
want to lock your car door. There's also a cool drum beat. Mike Jones again raps about his usual tricked out car antics
and gives out his phone number. With so many repeated lines, they only sound good over the best beats on the album.
And unfortunately this just isn't one of them.

The beats gets much better on a song called 'Know what I'm Sayin'
Awesome beat that makes you want to get down. Great use of samples on the hook. This song structure is similiar to
'Turnin lane' but the effect is just the opposite. Also, Jones' speeds up his flow so instead of the 4 bar delivery, he gives you
a 6 bar flow, which is quite impressive.

The next track is for the ladies as Jones puts it. It's called 'Type of Nigga U Need'
The jam is laid back with synths, funky bass, and triangles and chimes that give the song atmosphere.
Jones' comes through with this track. Good lyrics that make you smile. And again, makes your girl move.

The last song on this album is dedicated to Mike Jones' Grandma, with the same name.
He uses a sample on this track, and even sings to his grandma. Very heartfelt. He speaks about all the great things his
grandma did for him, and the valuable knowledge she gave to him. Also mentions how he felt inside when his grandma
passed away. You can really feel him on this song.

When you compare the songs with great beats, catchy hooks, and great flows to the songs with less than mentioned, you'll
wind up winning out with more good songs to skippable. This album won't just be in and out of the CD Player, you'll want
to play at least half of these songs more than once a day.

A good buy if you enjoy texas hip hop. This release also includes a second CD of all the songs screwed and chopped (which means slowed down). It really changes all the songs, and gives them an added element of danger. Very cool buy.

I think it's cool how Mr. Jones gives out his phone number in "Back Then". One day i'll try calling him and see if he answers! AT least he's honest about how nobody wanted him until he became a star. That's why I love him.
