Texas Sends Message to Sex Offenders, Can't Live Here
Many Texas Cities Limit Where Sex Offenders Can Live
Currently, Texas state law adopted in 1994 under the Child Safety Zone requires all registered sex offenders to reside in locations at least 1,000 feet away from any location where children congregate in public, such as those listed above. In 2003 the law was amended to include a restriction of movement inside the Child Safety Zone as well, providing exemptions to this rule for certain approved activities, such as parole reporting.
However, Texas does allow cities and municipalities to enact regulations that meet or exceed this 1,000 foot distance.
Because of this, some Texas cities, have taken steps to further reduce the areas in which sex offenders can legally register to live. Many cities have enacted a 2,000 foot rule, instead of the state's 1,000 foot requirement.
The Midland Reporter Telegram (MRT) indicates that, in Plano, Texas, this means less than 75% of the city meets the criteria for a sex offender to claim residence and properly register with authorities. In Dallas, even less of the city is available for sex offenders to make a home, with only 15% of the city meeting the registered sex offender residence requirements. Midland, Texas joins the ever-growing list of cities considering legislation to restrict where a registered sex offender can live. In the same article, the MRT also reported that there was growing concern in the City of Midland that due to tougher residential requirements on other, larger cities in Texas, many sex offenders may choose to relocate to the smaller Texas cities with less stringent residence guidelines.
The City of Killeen, Texas voted unanimously this week to restrict registered sex offenders to residential areas that are at least 2,000 feet away from schools, playgrounds, public parks, bus stops, and other public places where children meet or spend time. However, the new registered sex offender ordinance in Killeen will not include those registered sex offenders already living inside the city limits under the old ordinance, as long as they do not change residence. In Midland, Texas, if the ordinance passed to increase the distance to 2,000 feet, this would essentially limit a registered sex offender from living inside the city proper, and require any registered sex offender to move outside of the boundaries of the city's main loop.
The message many Texas cities are sending to sex offenders is clear: Texas doesn't want sex offenders living in the state.

It's the Law? Jessica's 'MURDER' Law, Adam Walsh 'MURDER' Law? Who claims responsibility for these laws? WHO claims accountability for the CHILD ABUSE and Mr. Ellis' Death, Please STAND UP! Florence Shapiro received a child safety award for concocting her MURDER law to include Texas' children? Perhaps she deserves CHILD ABUSE prosecution; Oh yea, the legislators are protected under their MURDER Laws disclaimer, go figure!
Texas need to wake up. The laws pertaining to sex offenders are not punishable enough. I do research on sex offenders. There are sex offenders in my county that is breaking the law. Wake up Law Enforcement Agencies. Force the Laws pertaining to Sex offenders living too close to Schools. Sex Offenders have no life. They are convicted perverts.
I truly understand how you feel. I'm dealing with the same problem. I'm so depressed behind all of this. My husband offense was over 20 years ago and the lady lied on him so now he's suffering behind all of this and this crazy world filled with ignorant people are making it hard for SO's to live a normal life. He's done his time!! This is all political.
John, it's most likely that it will. It will not hurt you or your family, but it will hurt her parole. While she may not be under supervision for the crime any longer, registering as an offender is a life-long requirement. If she fails to meet those terms, she can go back to jail. Additionally, if you knowingly let her live with you, there's a possibility child protective services can step in to 'protect' your child. you should consult an attorney before you risk your child's safety.
My wife and I currently reside with a gentlemen whose wife has just been released from prison. She was incarcerated on a drug charge and failure to register as a sex offender. Her sex offense occurred 14 years ago and she is no longer under supervision for that crime. We have a four year old. Will the law prevent her from residing with us?
I think that SO's that are a danger to society should be in prison. If a person has done their due punishment then that should be the end of it. The laws are making a normal life impossible for these people. And not everyone on the sex offender registry is actually guilty. It is possible that people take a plea because in a he said-she said type of scenario (i.e. no witness or evidence of any kind) there is no way to win, the people automatically believe the "victim". (Why would anyone lie about that? Hah!
i totally agree with you. i have met an awesome man and he is perfect. i have known him a year now. i have a 22 month old son. and he cant even be around him. he is 25 now and when he was 18 a girl lied about her age and her parents walked in. she was only 14 but she lied and said she was 19. she admitted to my boyfriends attorney that she lied but when it came time for court she changed her story cause she was infront of her parents. so he is now a sex offender because a little girl wanted to grow up so fast. DO NOT GET ME WRONG. i think sex offenders should be punished. but he will be punished his whole life for the and thats not fair. if he knew or their was proof he knew, if the situation was different i would totallly understand.. but this isnt fair and no matter how much he pays a lawyer it isnt going to change.
im 20 yrs old enagged to a sex offender, for a revenge charge and when u go to court and you hear sex offender thats all a judge sees and its ruining our lives im looking for a house for us since we got kicked out of our apartment because the pool is to close to us... and everyhouse i find and love i cant have, or i can i just cant be with the guy if my dreams i love him so much and these "laws" are just hurting the offender but it also affects their family and especially when it was innocent, when a 10yr old boy wants to learn how to jake off what do u do? u tell him right well mom sd that it was more and if you meet my guy u know without a doubt that he would never hurt a child! he has 3, he cant even see anymore and it hurts so bad cuz we was actually thinking of a fammily and we cant do anything because of the jugde didnt hear his story!!! just the victums!
im so pissed and im loosing my mind, i now there are bad people in the world but the ones that people see and think are b
