Texas Viognier Wines: Try These Delicious Whites

Sally Ann Murphy
Viognier is a white wine grape that grows surprisingly well in Texas, especially in the Texas Hill Country climate. Viognier is usually best served when young, so don't age your Viognier beyond five years. Its strong fruit flavors can stand up against spicier cuisines, such as Thai, and also go well with pork, chicken and shellfish. Many of the lighter Viognier wines also go perfectly with cheeses and fruit. Think you might enjoy this fruit-forward, white wine? Try some of the Texas Viognier wines below!

Becker Vineyards. Becker Vineyards is in the Texas Hill Country, home to many fantastic vineyards and wines. They have more than 45 acres of planted vineyards and produce eight varietals of wine, including their amazing Viognier. Be sure to try their 2010 Becker Vineyards Viognier, which usually retails for about $15. You will enjoy this white wine's aromas of lemon and honey, followed by flavors of peach and herbs. Pair this Texas wine with pork and chicken dishes. For more information on this winery and its Viognier wines, click here.

Alamosa Wine Cellars. Another Texas Hill Country winery, Alamosa Wine Cellars, is the only Texas winery that is dedicated to producing warm climate varietals, including Tempranillo and Syrah. Their 2007 Viognier, retailing for about $25, is an outstanding example of Texas Viogniers. It has aromas of vanilla and pineapple, and flavors of tangerine and mango. This is a lighter Viognier wine and pairs very well with mild cheeses and seafood. Alamosa Wine Cellars also grows blending grapes such as Grenache in its vineyards, but Viognier grapes were the first varietal they planted, and their expertise shows. This is the perfect white wine to serve with a fruit and cheese plate. For more information on the Viognier (and other) wines of this Texas winery, click here.

Fantastic! White wine isn't my favorite, but this one actually sounds worthy of a sample.
