Texas Zinfandels: Enjoy This Terrific Texas Red Wine

Sally Ann Murphy
Zinfandel grapes generally produce a hearty, fruity red wine, unlike the light-hearted blush wine known as White Zinfandel. Zinfandel wines are terrific for pairing with spicy and rich foods, Latin food, and almost anything Italian. The taste of a Zinfandel will vary with the ripeness of the grapes when they are harvested, as well as the climate in which they are grown. Zinfandel grapes grow very well in the Texas Hill Country, as well as other wine regions in the state, and are well worth trying if you enjoy a good red wine. For information on Texas wineries that create outstanding Zinfandel wines, as well as some recommended wines, see below.

Woodrose Winery
Woodrose Winery is located in Stonewall, Texas, east of Fredericksberg. Their 2007 Zinfandel is outstanding - a lighter Zinfandel that has aromas of strawberries and cranberries, and flavors that include more berries and a little oak. This Texas Zinfandel is aged in new American Oak, which gives it its subtle flavor. For more information on this Texas winery and its wines, click here.

Homestead Winery
This North Texas winery has two outstanding Zinfandels, one from its Don Gabriel line and one from its Homestead Winery line. Located in the Red River Valley wine region, the Zinfandel grapes grown here are excellent for producing this delicious red wine. Try their 2007 Don Gabriel, which is a medium-dry red wine, with aromas of black cherry and boysenberry, and flavors of cranberries and a hint of black pepper. It has an amazingly smooth finish. Homestead's Zinfandel is a little bit lighter than the Don Gabriel, but just as delicious, with aromas that include blackberry and vanilla, and flavors of raspberry and licorice. Rabbit Ridge
Rabbit Ridge Winery has an excellent 2009 Zinfandel. Its flavors of blackberry and chocolate, as well as its aromas of oak and vanilla, are incredible. All of its vineyards are located in Paso Robles, Texas, where wine grapes seem to flourish. If you are looking for a smooth Zinfandel, you can't go wrong with this Texas red wine. Messina Hof Winery and Resort
If you are looking for a lovely Zinfandel, Messina Hof's Barrel Reserve 2006 is an award-winning example of this Texas wine. It has aromas of black currants and cherries, as well as flavors touched with sweet wood and cinnamon. Located in Bryan, Texas, this winery is well worth a visit if you live in or travel to Texas, especially if you are looking for a romantic spot. Becker Vineyards
Located in the Texas Hill Country, where many fine Texas wines are born, Becker Vineyards is well known for its outstanding wines. Their 2004 Zinfandel is no exception, a full-bodied red wine that has aromas of blackberries and licorice, followed by flavors of vanilla and very light oak. Becker Vineyards is another winery that is well worth a visit, and be sure to tour their outstanding tasting room. For more information on this Texas winery and its Zinfandels, click here.
