Typically you will find a site that looks great but has no valuable content, just fancy designing or you will find a site with good content but a look and feel to it that seems like something you would find on a website last updated in 1999. Rarely do I see a site that has in its possession all of the above qualities and when I do its usually one of the pioneering hip hop sites that have been around for a decade or more.
With that being said, recently while on one of my many StumbleUpon.com, Digg.com, or Google.com searches for new hip hop sites I came across a jewel amongst pebbles in the site Thacorner.net which unbelievably had more of my favorite qualities than most pioneering sites. Upon entering the site I was met with a fresh look that was a great balance-not too cluttered and not too plain. It had all of the necessary elements from graphics, to social media links, and content yet is seemed to mesh together well without seeming overbearing. The site loaded almost instantaneously, which in a genre where the sites dedicated to it are full of songs, videos and images...it isn't uncommon to have to wait a few seconds for the page to completely load.
The front page of the site is split up into several categories ranging from music, to news, editorials, reviews, sports, and also a forum. In the few months since I discovered the site I have come to notice that unlike most sites, the music, news, and videos aren't only updated daily-they are updated numerous times throughout the day whether it be a normal business day, a weekend or even a holiday. That is pretty rare amongst sites as usually updating occurs once a day if you are lucky on most hip hop sites. Furthermore, Thacorner.net seems to get new music and videos before most other sites and their news seems to appear around the same time as most sites.
In regards to editorials, reviews, and other print content I have to say that Thacorner.net does a great job of maintaining not only quality with its content but also quantity. The editorials, interviews, reviews, and sports commentary are of a high caliber of skill and seem to be professionally written and well articulated. When you add to that the fact that the content is updated at the least every day...you cant ask for more of a web surfing pleasure. Every day there is something new, entertaining and thought provoking to read.
Now the site also features a forum which is common amongst hip hop sites. The forum seems to be a pretty strong one with a lot of member activity as well as quality conversations, opinions, etc...The icing on the cake though is the fact that the founders and owners of Thacorner.net are active members of the forums with at least one of them being on literally 24/7. That's pretty much unheard of-to have a highly popular site where the owners actively participate and interact with the members. At any given time one of the founders will be asking the members how they think the site could be better and which route to go, so the customer appreciation is phenomenal. As is stated on the site itself, Thacorner.net takes a new approach at being a successful hip hop site. Instead of being a site that happens to have a forum, Thacorner.net is a forum based site where the forum is the backbone and everything is built around it. Members of the forum frequently submit content which is displayed on the home page as well as offer commentary on what they would like to see on the site.
Overall, this new site which has only been up a few months is a breath of fresh air. They are innovative and creative, on the cutting edge of website building and understand that the user is the most important element to the site. Thacorner.net has become my "go to" site in relation to hip hop and given the unprecedented popularity and success of the site within its first few months of operation I feel as if this site will be with us for years to come. Thacorner.net is setting the stage to be the best hip hop site in 2010.

Post a CommentI also "StumbledUpon" ThaCorner.net and as the author of this article points out, their approach to the hip hop culture is very refreshing.
The articles and reviews are in depth and intelligent but their tone isn't preachy or elitist, but rather...refreshing like I said.
The forums are also closely moderated, which gives it a mature, yet still very entertaining atmosphere.
