Thailand Miss Jumbo Queen is Announced for 2009; Winner Weighed in at 110 Kilograms

This year's Thailand Miss Jumbo Queen 2009 was won by Tarnrarin Chansawang . Thailand is well known for its beautiful women, but this contest is only for those beautiful females who are over 80 kilograms. The average Thai woman tends to be small and petite so the Miss Jumbo Queen is viewed as coming from an elite group. The prize for the winner is 50,000 THB, which is about three month's wages for the average Thai. I would imagine that some people in the west would find the name Miss Jumbo Queen to be a bit offensive, but it was previously referred to as Queen Elephant and this is still how many Thai people refer to it.

The Thailand Miss Jumbo Queen 2009 was held in Samphran Elephant Zoo. The women ranged in weight right up to about 182 kilograms; an award for heaviest woman was given to Thanchanok Mekkeaw. The purpose of the competition is to promote healthy living. Nowadays entrants need to attend a slimming course prior to the event and those who manage to lose the most weight during this time get extra marks from the judges. The rest of the marks are for her beauty and her ability to impress those awarding the marks. Those responsible for the event make it clear that Miss Jumbo Queen is not about making fun of people. The purpose of the show is to raise money for actual elephants and to raise public awareness of their difficulties; so it is all in a good cause.

When I first arrived in Thailand I found things like Miss Jumbo Queen to be a bit strange. It all seemed so politically incorrect and sort of cruel. Then I learned that this is Thailand and they have their own way of seeing the world. Feminists around the world might cringe and be outraged by the event, but no Thai woman I have ever met has ever seen it this way. For them Miss Jumbo Queen is simply a special night for those women who like to live it large. Beauty is a very subjective thing and there is no doubting that some of the winners of this competition are quite beautiful. In fact there are parts of the world where these women would be seen as the very stunning. Maybe it would be a nice idea if they had a Mr Elephant King as well; the competition for this would be fierce.

I just saw pics of the 2009 Jumbo Queen. I'm very happy to say I was wrong. All my Jumbo Queen friends and news articles told me it was finished, but it looks like they,ve started it again. Hooray!

  • the last jumbo queen contest was in 20058/24/2010

Sadly the last Jumbo Queen was in 2005. I know a lot of the contestants including Thanchanok Mekkeaw (who is now 149kg) and still beautiful.

I have no problem with it. you are right about culture being different. if they feel respected and enjoyed themselves, I think it is great for anyone to feel beautiful and like the center of attention at least once in life. And it is good to see a country celebrating a type of woman that is sometimes scorned. I used to be much bigger than I am today (Im a healthy weight now) but hiding and feeling bad about myself did not burn a single lb. Embracing myself first is what gave me the strength to make changes.
