'Thanks' - a Mother's Day Poem

Because Someone Really Ought to Say This

W.R. Murphy
I thought I'd write you a poem for Mother's Day.
You're far away and haven't been back East in,
well, years and change, and I only ever get home
for Christmas, and I thought it would be nice
to say I've missed you, and think if I could
do it all again, I'd go to college closer to you.

That said, I hope this finds you well and gives
you something to print out and hang on the fridge.
After a while people might lose touch, but here it goes -
my shot in the dark against all entropy,
and maybe it can echo long enough to leave
a lasting bridge of letters and emails that will
keep us close in touch for a long time to come.

In short, Mom, since I've been so long away
at school, in life, and wandering, I want to send,
though it may seem a little bit inadequate,
a lasting and resounding "thanks!" I couldn't
have done any of this without support
from the home-front, and in that you've never failed.

-all my love-
