Thanksgiving Craft: Decoupage Votive Holders

Creative and Pretty, a Nice Touch for Your Holiday Decor

Mary Ward
Looking for a striking addition to your Thanksgiving décor? Glowing warmth for you mantle or festive candlelight on your Thanksgiving table? Decoupage votive candle holders in a pretty Fall motif!

What You Need:
Decoupage medium or white glue (thinned with water, try 1 part glue to 2 parts water to start)
Votive Candle holders (clear or frosted glass for best effect, available where crafts are sold)
Foam craft brush or paint brush
Paper or fabric leaf cutouts
Candles

What To Do:
To start, cut out leaves to apply to the votive holders. You can make your cutouts from nearly any material. Fabric, wrapping paper, scrap booking papers, old cards, even napkins and tissue paper. Save time by shopping the craft section of your local store for ready to use die-cut shapes. Any material that will mold flat around the votive cup will work. For a glowing, stained glass look, thinner materials are best (i.e. napkins or tissue paper cutouts). Not a fan of detail cutting? You can still make a nice Fall votive cup by cutting squares of tissue paper in browns and oranges, arrange and overlap for a faux stained glass effect.

On the outside of the votive holder, apply a thin layer of the decoupage medium or thinned glue. Position cutouts on the glue, arranged however you like. You may want to make several identical votive holders, or craft each cup a little differently for a coordinating set. Gently smooth any wrinkles (unless you like the look, and that's okay, too). Paint a thin layer of glue or decoupage medium over the entire picture, making sure to go beyond the edges of your motif. Let sit until dry. Paint over the picture with glue again two or three times, allowing each layer of glue to dry before applying another. Repeat until all edges lay flat and the decoupage is sealed.

Enjoy
That's it! Your votive holders are ready to use. Enjoy the warmth and glow of your votive candles in your pretty new Fall votive holders. The same technique can be used on nearly any flat surface to craft coordinating trays, vases and more!

  • Decoupage is a technique used to apply fabric, prints, pictures and botanicals to a surface.
  • Decoupage is a way to customize with beautiful pictures, even of you have no artistic ability.
  • Decoupaged tissue paper cutouts create a nice stained glass effect.
You can decoupage candles using glue or melted paraffin wax.
