Thanksgiving Crafts for Sixth Grade

Big Kids Love Crafts Too!

Rebecca Rosenburg
Thanksgiving crafts for middle school classrooms can include advanced art techniques compared to elementary school Thanksgiving crafts. Sixth graders enjoy creating art, and doing crafts for Thanksgiving will be a fun activity. Some fun Thanksgiving craft ideas for middle school students include: shadow box, wood burning, and fall mosaic turkey.

Thanksgiving Shadow Box

Materials:

shoe box or similar sized box
construction paper
poster board
markers, crayons, colored pencils
glue

Directions:

Instruct students to create a scene from the era surrounding the first Thanksgiving. The scene should be as historically accurate as possible, and need not be the actual first Thanksgiving. Use the poster board to make cut-outs of the people, objects, and background in the scene, then use construction paper to clothe the people and decorate objects. Markers, crayons, or colored pencils can be used as well.

Thanksgiving Wood Burning

Materials:

wood scraps or wood designed for carving
wood burning tool
pencil

Directions:

Sixth grade students should use a pencil to draw the design they plan to burn into the wood. It could be an icon of Thanksgiving such as a turkey or could be a "Happy Thanksgiving" or similar messaged sign. A teacher or teacher's assistant should personally supervise the use of the wood burning tool.

Fall Mosaic Turkey

Directions:

Students should gather the materials for this project on their own. Some materials can be brought from home, and the teacher can take sixth graders outside to gather more materials. To create the Fall Mosaic Turkey, students will exclusively use materials such as leaves, rocks, pinecones to create a model turkey. Materials such as scissors and glue should be provided, but all other materials should be harvested from outside. Sixth graders can be especially creative with this Thanksgiving craft project!
