Thanksgiving Customs in the United States

Family and Thanks Are the Themes of Thanksgiving

Thanksgiving is celebrated in American on the 4th Thursday in November. This holiday is an important one for families across the United States. What are some of the customs that are associated with an American Thanksgiving?

Americans are true believers in family. Thanksgiving is the day where family gathers around a table to thank God for the blessings of the year. Family does not necessarily mean blood relatives. Many communities host a dinner for the entire city. The invitation in Conway, Arkansas, reads, "anyone who wants to enjoy Thanksgiving with others, come and eat." The employees of the local Bank provide the meat, and the community brings pies, side dishes, etc. Many homes have gatherings of friends, acquaintances, and others who are not related. The tradition of gathering is a custom observed in the United States.

When people gather, the best china and silver, is usually brought out to serve the "family." The home is decorated with wreaths and other fall decorations.

The meal usually consists of a carved turkey, pumpkin pie, cranberry sauce, pecan pie, sweet potato pie, cornbread dressing or some other specialty, and various beverages to drink. In the Southern United States, the feast is not complete without pecan or sweet potato pie. Some families smoke their turkeys all night for the meal, on a smoker located outdoors. Some prefer a deep fried turkey, fried to perfection in an outdoor cooker.

If friends or relatives are not coming to dinner, usually Thanksgiving cards are sent to them. These cards usually offer a personal note, that they will be missed at the family celebration.

When everyone is seated at the table, a prayer of thanks is offered for the blessings that the family has received during the year. Some families take turns telling what they are most thankful for.

Thanksgiving Day is the official beginning of the Christmas season in America. The next day, "Black Friday," is the official start of Christmas shopping. Many stores offer special sale items. These are usually offered for early shoppers. Early shoppers in the United States often stand in line all night at the stores to get these bargains. Stores open as early as 4:30 a.m. for the shoppers.

Thanksgiving Day in the United States is a holiday, that is like no other. It is a day of reunions, family time, and prayerful thanks.
