Done with Halloween preparations, you now think of what comes next: Thanksgiving.
What can you do to decorate the yard in a way that will be simple, yet inviting?
Here are a couple of ideas to get you started.
Pumpkins are not just for Halloween. They come in different shapes, sizes, colors, and textures. I love walking through a grocery store and seeing their display of pumpkins.
Pick some of different sizes. Make sure you get a large one, a couple of medium ones, and few smaller ones.
Next, stop by your favorite home store and buy one to three bales of hay, depending on the size of your yard. If you know some farmers, you may be able to get some hay without having to spend much, if anything, at all.
You might also want to have a scarecrow, or one to two pilgrim figures to place near your hay.
If you don't have them, you can make them.
For scarecrow instructions click on the following link: http://www.ehow.com/how_3981_make-scarecrow.html.
For your pilgrim figures, follow the instructions for the scarecrow and dress them up as pilgrims.
Now for the decorating part.
If you have a small yard, you'll want to place the bales of hay in the center. If you just bought one, after placing it in the center, begin displaying the pumpkins (facing the road or driveway). You may want to place the large pumpkin on the ground in front of the bale, and then arrange the other ones on the bale itself.
Next, place your scarecrow or pilgrim figure right behind the back corner of the bale.
If you decide to make a smaller version scarecrow, you can place it on top of the bale, among the pumpkins.
If you have a big yard, you may want to decorate closer to the front of the yard, towards the beginning of your driveway.
Take two bales and place them next to each other. Take the third one and stack it on top, creating a pyramid.
Next, take your large pumpkin and place it by the front side of the bales.
Take your figure and place it opposite of the pumpkin.
Finally, arrange the other pumpkins between the scarecrow and the large pumpkin.
Other items you can add to the decorations are potted mums.
For the small yard, place the potted mums next to the large pumpkin or on top of the bale while all the pumpkins are arranged on the ground in front of the hay.
For the large yard, you may want to purchase two potted mums and place them to the side of the top bale as the large pumpkin lays on top of the pyramid and the smaller pumpkins are arranged in the front, with the scarecrow standing a couple of steps away looking towards the decorations.
If you have a cornucopia, fill it with leaves, corn, and pumpkins and place it on top of the bale while the potted mums sit on the ground in front of it. The scarecrow can be placed behind the bale.
These are just simple ideas.
With the items at hand, you can arrange them according to your taste and what you think will look best in your yard.
