Thanksgiving should fall into this category but somehow it doesn't always. I guess the answer to this question is what do you want to do? Personally I find that my family is just as happy with an email message saying, "Thanksgiving dinner, my place, 11:30am, come hungry". However, many feel it is necessary to make a formal invitation or people will not think it to be a serious party.
I suppose if you need everyone to dress up in their royal finest and attend your dinner like a black tie affair, then an invitation stating such is absolutely necessary. This would need to be the kind of invitation that brides drool over when planning their wedding. Leaf paper inside to keep the ink from smudging, formal print and text, and make sure to mention that it is a black tie affair. Don't forget the reply card and the save the date card! Okay, that might be a little over the top, but to each his own desires.
Then again, you might just be a crafty kind of person and want to make a fun invitation just to lighten the mood. Not everyone has email, because there are still people who cannot turn on a computer, so a formal or fun invitation is the only way to let them know you are having a party. At least it would be if it wasn't for that wonderful invention, the telephone. However, for those who wish to have a little fun, make a turkey shaped card that says "I'm glad I'm greetin' instead of being eaten!" or some other fun and silly phrase. A man pilgrim's hat is really simple and fun for the kids to help out with. Just cut out a square frame in yellow, a white band and then the hat shape in black. I used to take aluminum foil, crinkle it up, then unwrap it and lay it on a piece of cardboard. Then place cling wrap over the foil and draw a cornucopia in permanent marker, marker board markers work best. Then on the back glue on your invitation, it's a sparkly picture your guest can use for decoration as well. Whatever you choose to do it will be the right choice for you. Don't let anyone tell you different.
