Thanksgiving Doesn't Only Come with Turkey!

A Thankful Heart Shouldn't Begin and End in November

Regina Sunderland
Have you ever noticed how certain days just seem to affect the way we act? Thanksgiving makes some of us rub our bellies in anticipation of another super meal and others break out in hives. We plan the meals way in advance, make our guest lists and even argue with our family and friends of who gets to host this year's big Thanksgiving get together. Who makes the Turkey, the star of the feast and who has to privilege of carving it? It is one of the most glutinous holidays there is and we have fully forgotten the reason for this particular season.

The day is called Thanksgiving and sure we are grateful on that day. Look at Aunt Marge and how beautifully she arranged the desert table again. And aren't we just thankful that Uncle Joe did bring his newest Girl-friend; we hardly have gotten over the last one. And then there is good old Grandma that nobody seems to even think of all year long, but aren't we all just so grateful that she has made it yet another year while she sits almost forlorn in her memories between cousins Sue and Mac. We are thankful that the Turkey came out perfect, that we have had the foresight to make an extra pot of coffee and order a few extra pies. We will be thankful when everyone is done and we can finally sit down to eat and of course we are more then grateful when the entire day is over and we didn't need to take a loan out of the bank just to pay for all of it again.

We missed to point completely and yes in some Christian households the obligatory prayers are spoken before the Turkey is torn to pieces and the mashed potatoes are dished out with tons of gravy. We have designated one day in the entire year to be thankful and it all has started in November and ended on that day too.

Now I am aware that many of us don't feel as if we have anything to be thankful for, but if you are reading this Article right now I know that you have at least one thing to be grateful for. So here is a little reminder course of what some of the little things may just be in your life to be grateful.

You have food on the table and are able to keep it down.

Sounds disgusting, but if you have ever been in the situation where you were so ill that you couldn't even keep the few crumbs you were able to eat down, you will real quick learn the meaning of gratefulness when you finally have a full belly again. In some cases we don't have food, but that is relative. In this country we are always able to get food. It may not be the food we want, but we can get a meal. No matter how poor we are, food is available to us, if we are not too proud, too drunk or too foolish to get it.

You have eyes to read and ears to hear.

Again it is so natural for us to not even think about this, but if you ever loose your eyesight you will know what I mean. Even now as we may have to due without this valuable sight, we have other ways of finding communications. We are living in a world that has books on tape, Braille for the blind to read with their fingers and many places that will teach us that skill. We have an information overload out there and many of thousands more then educated people willing to teach those willing to learn.

We live in a country were we have the freedom to be completely stupid.

You think I am kidding? I am not, in any other country when you burn a flag, you may just find yourself with a bullet in your head. When you act as if you are born from a monkey, you may just find yourself drowned. Yes, I agree this country has taken a lot for granted and I don't agree with a lot of the things the government seems to think they need to take away from the people, but look at what all we have left. You have the right to read whatever book you choose, wear whatever color you wish to wear. If you want to eat until you explode it is your freedom to do so and we even have the right to take our own rights away. Wow, you tell me if we don't have cause to drop to the ground and be grateful for what we have.

We have some of the best Universities in the World and anyone that wants to learn has the ability to do so.

Seriously, it is your own choice if you don't want to learn. If you want to take advantage of all there is offered out there, we have more then enough organizations in this Country to help you get the education you need. You may not find the prestige Colleges you want, but you can get a fine education in this country. Education here is something we can have if we really want it; we are getting stupider by our own choice. And for that too we should be grateful, because we have that right to choose to mess up our own lives.

You have cloth on your back, food in your stomach and a roof over your head. And before anyone brings the homeless up to me, I have to add that most have chosen alcohol, drugs and laziness over a stricter organization that would make them live by the rules of society. Yes, you can get out of the gutter and get a job; you can clean up and become productive again. I know, I was there with a family and yes I had to stay in a shelter. That is a long time ago and I hated every second, but I am grateful that is was available to me.

You have a tongue to speak and it hasn't been cut out yet, because you spoke up against your political regime. You have hospitals that have to take you in, regardless if you throw our native language in the American Peoples face and refuse to learn it. We have stores that are stocked to the prime with some of the most useless stuff you ever want to see, but it is there for us if we want it.

Even our poor have one or more TVs, Stereos and at times even Computers. We have running Water, hot and cold faucets, stoves that will allow us to cook our meals. We have places where we can wash our cloth, transportation from one area of the world to another and more.

And believe it or not as much as we may hate each other at times, we have each other. We have the right to annoy the hell out of each other, to be mean to each other and when it is all said and done, we have the right to love, forgive and forget.

We are marvelous human beings that are made to be wonderful. We are the ones that decide to fail, nobody made us. We are ungrateful and forget just how much we have.

Even our dying and terminally ill still have things to be grateful for, because they are not thrown out of society as is in so many places in the world. We have some of the best things in life and if we are having them taken from us, it is because we no longer cherish them enough to fight to keep them. We have become such placid animals that we just sit in our lazy chairs and moan instead of take action and kick injustice in the butt.

We have young people that are willing to join a military that will ship them all over the world to fight battles which they fight with courage, even when they would rather be at home with their own families and probably rather hold their Arms up to defend their own country should need ever arise. Regardless if you believe this War is right or wrong, we still have those young people that have the guts to do such a thing and not hide behind the skirts of others. No, they are out there and put their life on the line daily so others may live.

We have Politicians that lie their asses off every time the open their mouth, but they entertain us to the best of their abilities and give us yet another reason to complain and moan. They stand up and do something in the public eye that we are too chicken to do. Yes, guess what, it isn't easy being ripped apart in the media everyday. But they do it. They lie because they want to achieve their goals and because we the People can not handle the truth. If those Politicians would ever tell us the truth about health care, Social Security and Immigration we would never elect them.

We are more worried about their sexual lives then what they have achieved and what they would be able to give to us if we wouldn't try to pull their teeth constantly.

We are a country in which we can be merciful and hide behind false morality when we no longer have anything to say. We have enough food to be 70% obese. You tell me if we don't have cause to be grateful daily.

We are now able to do things we weren't even able to imagine 25 Years ago and in another 50Years we will have doubled our technology to the point were humans are absolutely useless, but eh we have the ability and the right to do that. Be grateful and remember that goes under the freedom to be stupid.

My point is that we have a million small things in our everyday lives to be grateful for. For my part, I don't need Turkey to remember that and maybe you shouldn't either.
