Thanksgiving Poem Number Ten

James R. Ford
When the eyes are opened
and the body has climbed out of bed
realize, it's no ordinary day
morning coffee is brewed and while consumed,
the children enter the room
Happy Thanksgiving Dad!, they exclaim
as they plop down onto the couch

The TV is turned on
and the Macy's Thanksgiving Parade begins
live from Herald Square

the Rockettes are there
along with marching bands
floats with the holiday theme
singers, actors, and balloons
of cartoon characters over fifty feet tall
the parade ends with Santa Claus
making his first appearance of the season

The big bird is in the oven cooking away
a short lunch and snacks
football on the TV
with the Lions losing again
all the way until dinner is served

The family is together again
gathered in a circle
around the table of food aplenty
bowed heads in prayer
Thanks is given and a blessing for all

Pie is served
later in the afternoon.
