Thanksgiving Through the Ages

Ancient Thanksgiving Celebrations

Carole Anne Somerville
From ancient times to modern people the world over

Have joined in thankful celebration

For the bounty of the harvest

Freeing them of starvation

Over the winter ahead

Festivals in Greece honour the Grain Goddess Demeter

As she ensures the fertility of the earth

Provides for all earth's creatures

Grand feasts prepared in her honour

Include the first fruits of the season

Festivals in Rome honour Ceres, Goddess of the Corn

Offerings made, sports and games

Enjoyed, all in thankfulness

Gratitude for a plentiful harvest

For feast instead of famine

Thankfulness expressed all through the world all through the seasons

In spring ancient Egyptians

Gave thanks to the God Min

At the time

When the grain harvest was in

Moon cakes baked in China

At the time of the birthday of the Moon

Pigs roasted along with harvest fruits

Giving thanks and hoping

To be granted good fortune

Thanksgiving observed in a variety of ways the world over

To many deities

Bringing together families

Joy of celebration, of expectation and anticipation

Thanksgiving: a mix of gratitude and tradition
