Thanksgiving a Time for Reflection

Haiku for Thanksgiving

Shana Dines
Thanksgiving is near and it is always a time of reflection for me. My birthday falls very close, and sometimes every 7 years or so, depending on Leap Year it actually falls on Thanksgiving. As a child I thought it was kind of cool, until I realized that I was lumped in with Thanksgiving. I got my presents and then everyone just went about the day like I was in the way. Better than being totally ignored but as an adult Thanksgiving is left to the women, usually to do all the work.

I am grateful that I have the money to prepare food. I love to cook and I love my family. I am looking forward to having Thanksgiving again this year at our house. I am saddened by all of the losses that we have had this year and the year isn't even over yet. I am grateful though for all those that we have in our lives. I am anticipating Christmas and our Christmas program this year at church. We are doing a Christmas Cantada with another church. It is very difficult but rewarding.

We are doing a lot of volunteer work and helping those who have less than we do. This year has been easier for us financially and we are empathetic with those who are struggling. There is always someone who needs more than we do. We are teaching our son to reach out and help others too. It also helps to not dwell on your own losses and pain when you help others.

God bless you all and I hope you all have a blessed Thanksgiving and Christmas.

Treat this day gently,
Quietly reflect on those,
We are thankful for.
