Thanksgiving Time Tips

How to Save Your Money and Your Sanity This Thanksgiving

Brenda Hoffman
A lot of people make Thanksgiving hard on themselves because they are unorganized. This year, why not enjoy your Thanksgiving Day? Here are some great tips to help you do just that.

• Start a new Thanksgiving tradition this year. Have each family member share one thing for which they are thankful.

• You should make an appointment now if you are planning to have your house professionally cleaned for Thanksgiving this year.

• Before you go shopping for the food for Thanksgiving Day, you need to use as much of the food in the refrigerator as you possibly can.

• You can prepare your side dishes ahead of time then freeze them. You can also do this with a few of the meals for before Thanksgiving Day. This way you will not have to spend time cooking when you should be entertaining guests from out of town instead.

• If you plan on traveling this Thanksgiving you should think about leaving a few days early and coming home a few days after Thanksgiving. Thanksgiving Day is the busiest travel day of the year.

• If you are the hostess for this year's Thanksgiving dinner you should not hesitate to delegate what each family should bring. It is very acceptable to have each family bring one or two dishes to share.

• A lot of grocery stores sell meals that are already prepared for the holidays. For people who are extremely busy, this could be a great option for you.

• Before Thanksgiving you should purchase some disposable containers. These are great for sharing the leftovers with everyone. Simply pack up a little "to go" plate for everyone.

• If you purchase a frozen turkey, you should know that it is going to take 3 - 4 days to thaw out in your refrigerator. You need to remember to take your turkey out in plenty of time.

• Your children will enjoy making a Thanksgiving craft together and they will be proud to display them on Thanksgiving Day. One idea is to make a hand print turkey card for each of your dinner guests. Simply paint one of your child's hands brown, and then paint each of your child's fingers a different color. Your child can then "stamp" their hand on the outside of the card. Inside of the card have your child write what they are thankful for about that person.

• Remember! Holiday memories do not just have to do with taste. They have to do with smell too. So, purchase some pumpkin scented candles to place around the house. Let them burn, well out of the reach of children.

• Well before Thanksgiving Day you should check out how many dishes, tables, tablecloths and chairs you have available. If you do not have enough of these items it may be possible to borrow them from a friend. This is an especially good idea if your storage space is limited.

• A few days before Thanksgiving Day you should wash and iron any linens that you will be using.

• If you know someone who is single, you could consider inviting him or her to join your family for Thanksgiving Day festivities.

• It is a good idea to have some toys, games and activities around for the children to enjoy once they are done eating. This will allow the adults to be able to have a conversation.

Utilizing just a few of these tips will save your sanity and your budget this Thanksgiving. If you are able to use all of these tips then you will be all that much further ahead. Yet, regardless of how many tips you use, make sure that you have a happy Thanksgiving!
