The 10 Best Heavy Metal/Alternative Metal Songs of 2008
An Eclectic List with Elements of Heavy Metal, Metal Rap, Emo, Southern, Punk, Pop, and Death Metal
Metal Rap pioneer and leftist agitator Zack (from Rage Against the Machine) De La Rocha is back and the rage level of Wild International raises the bar for rage rockers and rappers alike. Combining a sound nearly identical to Rage's, updated politics, and Gangsta Rap sensibilities, Wild International shows how far Zack has come from his "f--- you I won't do what you told me!" days. www.onedayasalion.org/
2. Devour, by Shinedown; 5-6-2008 Label:Atlantic
An alternative metal protest song, Devour delivers, and Shinedown shines a bright light on the forces of darkness. This song will endure, as Black Sabbath's War Pigs has, unless peace breaks out. Sources en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Devour_(song)TTR
3. The Day That Never Comes, Artist: Metallica; 9-12-2008; Warner Brothers Records
This song is a metal epic, which addresses domestic violence from a battered woman's point of view. Metallica is still the most intellectual and brutal metal band outside of the atonal death-metal scene. As always, their musicianship is of the highest quality. 4. Re-Education(through labor)-Rise Against; 8-19-2008; Geffen
Rise Against's most successful anthem of anarchy to date. Although they probably wouldn't like being classified as metal, the music in Re-Education through labor is both melodic and metallic; the lyrics are anarcho-punk to the core.Sources en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Re-Education_(Through_Labor) ,TTR, WRRV FM
5. Black Cat Road by Gideon Smith and the Dixie Damned; 4-28-2008; Small Stone Records
The most metal edged new-school southern rock song I've heard since the days of Molly Hatchet. It starts out with old-time delta-blues slide guitar licks, and launches into a modern masterpiece with old-school heart. Sources http://www.allthatisheavy.com/info.asp?item_num=ATH-4992, TTR
6. Iron Will Artist: Grand Magus, 7-8-2008; CD Iron Will; Rise Above Records
The title cut of the latest Grand Magus album, is pure old-school heavy metal and Sabbath/Iron Maiden inspired. Excellent musicianship, production values and vocals add to the impact of the song Sources: www.roadrunnerrecords.com/blabbermouth.net/news.aspx ,TTR
7 Snake in the Grass by The Black Angels; April 15 2008; ; CD Directions to See a Ghost; Label: Light in the Attic
A genuinely creepy and hypnotic, too-long-for-the-radio (16:09) retro-goth-metal magnum opus; it may remain obscure, but The Black Angels have me hooked! Sources: www.popmatters.com/pm/review/the-black-angels-directions-to-see-a-ghost/ ,TTR
8. Bad Girlfriend by Theory of a Deadman-April 1 2008; Label: Roadrunner Records
Ihad a Bad Girlfriend once; did you? I still miss her. The lyrics are alcoholic and sexist; the music is mainstream but well executed. The song makes me laugh and I turn it up when it plays on the radio.www.roadrunnerrecords.com/music/view.aspx
9. All Hope is Gone by Slipknot;August 1 2008; Roadrunner Records
The song's name speaks for itself; the music defies description, expanding the boundaries of melodic death metal. Sources:www.rollingstone.com/rockdaily/index.php/2008/06/20/new-slipknot-album-a-first-listen-to-all-hope-is-gone/

10. Ready Set Go Artist: Tokio Hotel US Release Date 5-6-2008; Interscope Records
Impossible to classify, Tokio Hotel crosses over into the metal with this song of hope and revolution, speaking to the eternal teenager in us all.
Whatever the purists might say, this is one of the best heavy metal songs of 2008

Post a CommentI am not a fan of heavy metal but your article really rocks!!!
I must be getting behind on my rock music- I haven't heard of many of these songs and albums.
Dan--
Ni9ve article. I'll have to check out some of these songs. Bad girlfriend feels like a Nickelback song and the lyrics are inane, but I find myself singing along everytime I hear it.
