The 17 Day Diet - Dr. Phil Recommended, But Will it Help You Lose Weight?

Tiffany Bell
The 17 Day Diet is gaining popularity fast with the endorsements it is getting from Dr. Phil and the doctors from The Doctors talk show. Dr. Phil even just announced a weight loss challenge for viewers of the television shows in which the participants will follow the 17 Day Diet to lose weight. The challenge is not just for the teams participating on Dr. Phil and The Doctors but is also open to viewers who also want to lose weight for good this year. But, just because Dr. Phil recommends this diet, will it really help you lose weight?

A Closer Look at the 17 Day Diet

The 17 Day Diet was created by Dr. Mike Moreno. Dr. Mike, as he is usually referred to as, practices family medicine in California and also started a program called "Walk with Your Doc" in which twice a week he will actually walk with his patients who are looking to lose weight and get healthier.

The 17 Day Diet was originally written to help people avoid gaining weight during the holidays, but it can definitely be used any time of year to lose the weight. It's designed to help people take off the pounds quickly but in an effective and healthy way. It's not a magic cure for obesity but is a diet plan that changes the way you eat.

The diet is made up of different cycles, with each one specifically designed to improve certain body functions such as metabolism and digestion. The different cycles are used to also keep the body guessing. This is commonly called calorie shifting and is nothing new in the diet world. When you constantly change the foods you eat as well as how much food you eat, your body doesn't plateau as easily and you keep your metabolism charged.

The Four Cycles of the 17 Day Diet

The first cycle of the diet is the "accelerate" cycle in which a person is directed to cleanse their body of fat stores and of the bad things they have been eating before.

The second cycle is the "activate" cycle. This when you reset your metabolism so that your body starts burning more calories even while you are resting.

The third cycle is the "achieve" cycle in which you learn how to really change your eating habits for life. You learn what foods you can eat and which ones that you need to avoid. You also get to start eating healthy carbohydrates as well.

The fourth cycle of the 17 Day Diet is called the "arrive" cycle and is actually a combination of what you learned in the previous cycles. The difference with this cycle is that you get a break on the weekends so that you can enjoy a splurge day.

Throughout all the cycles on the 17 Day Diet clean eating is promoted which means you need to be able to give up processed foods and foods that contain things like high fructose corn syrup.

Also, exercise is encouraged throughout the diet as well. The diet plan even comes with a 17 minute exercise routine that can be done on a daily basis along with the cycles to help promote even more weight loss.

Will the 17 Day Diet Help You Lose Weight?

If you completely follow the 17 Day Diet, you can pretty much ensure that you will lose some weight. The thing to keep in mind is that not everyone will be able to lose the same amount but by simply eating healthier and incorporating exercise into your daily routine you are bound to lose some weight.

The 17 Day Diet is not much different from other calorie shifting diets that have been followed for awhile. Just because all of a sudden Dr. Phil and The Doctors are promoting this diet, it doesn't mean that it is anything new. Will it work for you? Probably, but if you really want to lose weight, you need to look at long tern weight loss instead of just losing weight this month.

You could potentially follow this diet for the long term and keep the pounds off, but you could also just simply eat less and eat clean and then exercise 5 times a week and also keep the weight off. The 17 Day Diet will help people lose weight, but you need to decide if it is something that you can live with as this is much more than just a diet, it's a lifestyle change.
