The 1960's: Ten Haikus

Many Memories of Hope, of Loss and of Aging

David A. Reinstein, LCSW
Nineteen sixty came
And junior high school was done.
We met JFK.

Nineteen sixty one
Brought Camelot into sight
With high school anguish.

Nineteen sixty two
Brought both hope and some trauma-
Tomorrow looked good.

Nineteen sixty three
Introduced us to real life
And the death of dreams.

Nineteen sixty four
Brought the Great Society
With tears in Saigon.

Nineteen sixty five
Challenged us with induction.
Some went and some changed.

Nineteen sixty six
Had the nation in turmoil.
The music played on.

In sixty seven
Protests punctuated life
And politics bloomed.

Nineteen sixty eight
Spread much blood in Chicago
And murdered our dreams.

Nineteen sixty nine
Slaughtered us with Tricky Dick-
Darkness at the helm.

A decade of change-
A small part of it chosen,
Most fated and torn.
