The 2007 Ancient Vines Mourvedre by Cline Cellars

The 2007 Ancient Vines Mourvedre Pairs Well with Chocolate or with a Rich Main Course

Zachary Fruhling
When I was attending college at Sonoma State University, I spent a fair amount of time wine tasting in the Napa and Sonoma wine country. Cline Cellars in Sonoma has long been one of my essential wine tasting stops in Sonoma, partly because of its pleasant atmosphere and friendly customer service, and partly because Cline Cellars makes incredible wines. Although it has been several years since I last visited Cline Cellars in person, due to my having moved away from Sonoma to the Santa Cruz wine region, I recently bought a bottle of the 2007 ancient vines Mourvedre during a recent shopping trip to Whole Foods Market. I was excited to find a bottle of the Cline Cellars Mouvedre since the Mourvedre used to be one of my favorite red varietals from Cline.

For those of you who are unfamiliar with Mourvedre, it is a red wine that is rich and smooth with hints of chocolate and spice. As such, Mourvedre is the perfect red wine to be paired with e rich dessert such as chocolate cake or chocolate truffles. However, the ancient vines Mourvedre from Cline Cellars is by no means only a dessert wine. Mourvedre is robust enough to be paired with a rich main course such as steak or a beef stew.

Mourvedre is not an extremely common red varietal, but the ancient vines Mourvedre from Cline Cellars can be found at premium grocers and wine shops. Of course, there is no better place to acquire a bottle of the ancient vines Mourvedre than from the tasting room at Cline Cellars. The tasting room is in a charming old house with a wrap-around porch; the perfect place to enjoy a glass of wine, some chocolate, and perhaps a nicely-paired cigar. The customer service at Cline Cellars is friendly, and there are other unique varietals, such as Syrah, available for tasting at any given time.

If you are used only to ordinary red wines such as Cabernet, Zinfandel, or Merlot, treat yourself to a more interesting and less common red wine for your next dessert or dinner pairing. The 2007 ancient vines Mourvedre by Cline Cellars is a unique wine that is worth the extra effort it may take to track down a bottle. The ancient vines owned by Cline Cellars trace the history of this unique red wine grape, and Cline is one of the few wineries that still produce Mourvedre red wine in significant quantities. In conclusion, if you are a wine connoisseur, or merely a wine enthusiast, and you have not yet tried Mourvedre from Cline Cellars, there is something to be loved by all wine lovers in this premium red varietal wine.
