The 2007 National Thanksgiving Turkey

RK
Thanksgiving 2007 at the White House brings the annual turkey pardon for one lucky turkey. Actually two lucky turkeys. An alternate turkey is chosen, just in case the original turkey can't fulfill his or her duties. When it comes to being the National Thanksgiving Turkey, being runner up isn't such a bad thing. The runner-up may not be in the limelight, but will get to enjoy the prize nevertheless. The prize will be an unconditional pardon from the President of the United States, which means these two lucky turkeys will get to live out their lives in comfort free from fear of being on the dinner table.

This year's National Thanksgiving Turkey and alternate (the runner-up) were raised in Dubois, Indiana. They were raised like normal turkeys, except they were given much more human interaction so that the turkeys will be comfortable around people. The turkeys will be approximately twenty-one weeks old and forty-five pounds each when they reach the White House.

Each year both turkeys are named and this year is no different. If you want to have a say in these lucky turkeys names, you can vote at www.whitehouse.gov/holiday/thanksgiving/2007/. The six choices are:

Wing & Prayer
May & Flower
Gobbler & Rafter
Wish & Bone
Truman & Sixty
Jake & Tom

After the President Bush pardons the turkey at the National Thanksgiving Turkey Presentation, the turkey will be flown to Disney World in Orlando. First class flights, mind you. Only the best for these lucky birds. The pardoned turkeys will be the grand marshal at Disney World's Thanksgiving Parade. People interested in meeting 2007's luckiest turkeys will be able to do so after the parade in the backyard of Mickey's Country House in Magic Kingdom Park.

Turkey Facts
Wild turkeys can fly. Most domestic turkeys can't fly because they weigh to much. Domestic turkeys have been bred to weigh twice as much as wild turkeys.

According to Tom Savage, a poultry scientist in the Oregon State University Animal Sciences Department, turkeys are actually intelligent birds. The reputation they have gotten for being stupid is incorrect and unfair. The myth that turkeys will drown themselves in the rain is not true.

Benjamin Franklin wanted the turkey to be the National Bird of the United States.

Wow, that is too cool. And so much for my comment about turkeys being stupid birds in one of your other articles, LOL Guess they're not so stupid after all.
