The 2008 Jeep Liberty Debuts in New York

The newly redesigned 2008 Jeep Liberty was unveiled on April 4th 2007 at the New York International Auto Show. The retooled model, that looks very similar to the 2007 Dodge Nitro, packs many new features that will set itself apart. Included are many safety additions as well as more cargo space and a signature Jeep open-air roof.

The new Jeep was unveiled in the only outdoor display at the auto show, unfortunately the weather didn't cooperate with gusting winds and light rain. After a brief history of the Liberty, which made its initial debut on 2002, the burgundy 2008 model rose from a cloud of smoke. Frank Klegon, Vice President of Product Development for Chrysler, and an assistant holding his umbrella, introduced the new model. The ceremony showcased the new Sky Sliderä canvas folding sunroof, opening from the rear of the SUV all the way to the windshield. After the roof was opened, an umbrella popped out, giving the small crowd of photographers and press, braving the wet and cold, a chuckle. This open-air design is reminiscent of the early soft-top Jeep Wrangler models.

The new design is oddly familiar, similar in styling to it's sister model, the Dodge Nitro. In fact both models are produced at the same facility, on the same line. A recent multi million-dollar investment to the Toledo North Assembly Plant in Toledo, Ohio provided for seamless production of the two models simultaneously. With the 2007 Nitro outselling the Liberty, Chrysler decided it was time for a change.

Jeep has increased many safety features in this redesign. The Liberty still offers two Trail Rated â four-wheel drive systems, Command-Tracâ and Selec-Trac IIâ . In addition an independent front suspension and a five link rear suspension were added as well as a rack and pinion steering system for increased vehicle control. Additionally other safety features include all speed traction control, an electronic stability program, brake assist with advanced anti-lock brakes, tire pressure monitoring and standard side curtain air bags.

The updates do not stop there, as a retooled 3.7 liter SOHC V6 engine will be offered standard. Jeep decided to drop the 2.4 liter four cylinder and 3.8 liter V6 engines previously used in the Liberty. This new engine offers 210 horsepower with 235 pounds per foot of torque. Despite the increased vehicle weight, the fuel economy was increased to 16MPG city and 23MPG on the highway. This increase was largely based on the electronic throttle and more aerodynamic styling. Transmission options remain the same with a six speed manual and a four speed automatic.

Other updated features include more cargo space and rain sensing windshield wipers. In addition, the new Liberty will offer the MyGIG Multimedia Infotainment System™. MyGIG is a fully integrated navigation and entertainment system, providing a huge touch panel which will also recognize voice commands. The new Jeep features SIRIUS Satellite radio, which offers hundreds of stations as well as driving directions and real time traffic info. A 20 gig hard disc is also included, which can be used to store music and photos. Several other options are available in this new model including the Park Senseâ rear back up safety system and the Home Linkâ home security transmitter.

Production of the 2008 Jeep Liberty will begin July 2007 in Toledo, OH.
