Johnny Isakson has had a long political career. He served in the Georgia state house from 1976-1990, Georgia senate from 1993-1996, and the U.S. house of representatives from 1999-2005. There is no doubt that his political experience makes him a strong candidate for the Republican party. In the past the way he has voted on various issues makes me skeptical about him seeking a second term. First, according to on the issue voting records Isakson voted against an economic recovery package in February of 2009. Secondly, in May of 2006 he voted yes to limit the amount on medical liability lawsuits to $250,000. In some cases that amount will not cover a person's pain and suffering not even considering legal fees. Lastly, according to the ACLU he does not have a good track record when it comes to civil rights. He voted for the confirmation of Samuel Alito to the Supreme Court but then voted against the confirmation of Sonya Sotomayor for the Supreme Court. This seat needs to be filled by someone that is not going to play partisan politics but someone that is capable of working across the aisle for the betterment of all Americans whether they are Democrat, Independent, Libertarian, or Republican.
Michael L. Thurmond, the three term labor commissioner is challenging Johnny Isakson for the U.S. senate seat. Thurmond, who served as a Georgia state representative for the Athens district. According to the Atlanta Journal and Constitution was the first black person to serve his district since reconstruction. Although both his political and educational background are indeed impressive, yet he is still fairly unknown. He just qualified as a candidate for the senate race on April 30, 2010. He has lots of catching up to do because the Isakson is far ahead of him in the polls and in fundraising. Thurmond is currently the only Democrat running for the senate seat. Thurmond may be unopposed in the primary but I don't believe that he is a strong enough candidate to unseat Isakson.
If I had a choice of a person's name to throw in the hat for the U.S. senate race (Georgia). IT would be Denise Majette. She successfully unseated incumbent Cynthia McKinney for the U.S. House of Representatives in 2003. I believe she was able to do this because many Republicans crossed over to support her in efforts to remove Cynthia McKinney from office. Then prematurely before Majette established herself politically she ran against Johnny Isakson for the seat he currently holds where she was defeated. I think that now she has grown politically which would enable her to be a stronger candidate this time. She would represent the Democratic Party better than Thurmond in the 2010 November election.
