The 2010 Harley Davidson Night Rod Special

Low, Dark, and Mean- the 2010 Harley Davidson Night Rod Special

Don Kress
The dark offspring of the V Rod has a deeply sinister look lurking about it. The 2010 Harley Davidson Night Rod Special, while not new for 2010, still has a fresh feel, maybe because you really don't see too many of these bikes out there on the road. With numerous satin black parts, accentuated by caresses of red, the 2010 Harley Davidson Night Rod Special looks like a father's worst nightmare. As if it isn't bad enough that some biker is coming to pick up his daughter, but you show up on something that looks like a two-wheeled stealth bomber? The daughter's gonna love it, momma's gonna be jealous, and you best get movin' before old poppa decides to break out the squirrel shot.

The 2010 Harley Davidson Night Rod Special is essentially a painted and blacked-out V Rod, sharing all the major components including the heartily powerful Liquid cooled Revolution V-twin engine. Harley Davidson's foray into the next-generation V-twin has proved immensely popular in this ride, offering plenty of tire-shredding torque coupled with more than adequate fuel economy and civilized road manners. Rated to produce 85 lb/ft of torque, the 60-degree V-twin is fed with electronic sequential port fuel injection and has a compression ratio of 11.5:1, making the 2010 Harley Davidson Night Rod Special the sort of bike you're going to want to use better grades of fuel in. Fuel economy numbers are respectable, however, rating at 34 miles per gallon in the city and 42 miles per gallon on the highway, and it's not like you'll be needing rocket fuel. Follow the advice of your owner's manual concerning what grade of fuel to use, and you'll be golden. The 2010 Harley Davidson Night Rod Special uses a five-speed transmission, tuned just right to take advantage of the Revolution engine's extremely high (for a Harley,) peak RPM power band. At the end of the day, this bike just plain rips. Braking on the 2010 Harley Davidson Night Rod Special is handled by four-piston front and rear brakes.

There are three color options available for the 2010 Harley Davidson Night Rod Special, and frankly, if you don't like black, you're not going to like these. The base MSRP of $16,699 covers all three two-tone colors, including Black Denim / Brilliant Silver Denim Racing stripe, Vivid Black / Brilliant Silver Pearl Racing stripe, and Vivid Black / Mirage Orange Pearl Racing Stripe. For a great looking bike that puts a brand-new spin on the "dark knight" look, the 2010 Harley Davidson Night Rod Special needs nothing more than a rider who isn't afraid to climb on board.
