The 2011 Best Picture Race

A Breakdown of the Best Pictures

Norm Gilchrist
The Oscars are being awarded this Sunday, there is a couple of ways that the awards could go. But who will win. The following is my list of predictions starting with the who I think will win, and going downward. I have also included the films current Rotten Tomatoes rating.

The King's Speech - 94%

The King's Speech is the biography of the King George the VI, who reluctantly took the throne. The race is tight between this and The Social Network. However there has been a lot of momentum building with Colin Firth's winning streak.

The Social Network - 96%

The story of how socially inept genius created Facebook, and the feet he stepped on along the way. The script is tight, and the acting is top notch. But the film does not have the underdog type of character that The King's Speech has in Firth.

The Fighter - 90%

It is the true story of fighter "Irish" Mickey Ward. It focuses on his relationship with his drug addled brother. While Christian Bale seems to be a clear cut Oscar winner for his portrayal of Dicky Eklund, he also seems to run away with the film.

127 Hours - 93%

It is the true story of Aron Ralston, who becomes trapped while rock climbing in Utah. While James Franco's performance is riveting, most people knew where the film was going. It became a long road to get to that point.

Black Swan - 88%

Darren Aronofsky plunges the audience into a world of madness as a ballet dancer slowly cracks. A trippy, dark, and visually stunning film. This one falls into the too cool for the Academy section of the list.

True Grit - 95%

A retelling of the Charles Portis book. Featuring last years best actor winner and Oscar winning directors Joel and Ethan Cohen. It was good movie made by great people, but is riding on the re-teaming of the Cohens and Bridges. Although look for Hailee Steinfeld at the podium.

Winter's Bone - 95%

The story of a young woman trying to care for and keep her family together after her father jumps bail. It has been making waves around the award circuit, it still has not gotten the wide reception it deserves. Because of this it will leave Sunday night empty handed.

The Kids Are All Right - 94%

Family boundaries are blurred in this drama about a family who tires to reintroduce the lost father who served as a sperm donor to a same sex couple. The film is great. Bening and Moore are superb. But again the film didn't get enough of an audience.

Inception - 86%

Christopher Nolan's mind bending adventure into the dream world. It was a summer blockbuster, and I think Nolan will win for his screenplay. It was too popular for the Academy to honor.

Toy Story 3 - 99%

The third film in the Toy Story franchise sees Woody and the gang being donated to a preschool. It is the most critically acclaimed film on the list, and it will definitely win the Best Animated Film, I doubt it will win here.
