The Everex Impact GC3502 is the company's first personal computer that includes the OpenOffice productivity suite. It also comes preloaded with Microsoft Windows Vista Home Basic operating system, 1 GB system memory, 80 GB Hard disk drive and a CD-RW / DVD-Rom optical drive.
Because of the high cost of productivity suites, i.e. Microsoft Office, PC manufacturers have not been including any productivity software on their PCs. OpenOffice.org is an open source productivity suite included in Everex's GC3502 that can meet any student's computing needs. The OpenOffice.org software has a somewhat Microsoft Office interface with the exception that it has a built-in PDF converter. The OpenOffice suite is compatible with Microsoft Office Word, Excel and Powerpoint documents and can run on most operating systems without the need of a license.
Eugene Chang, Product Manager of Everex said, "For years now, industry restrictions and tightening profit margins have forced PC manufacturers to shy away from offering productivity software on their new PCs. "In creating the eco-friendly GC3502, our main focus was to build a no-compromise, back-to-school PC with all the software applications a typical student would require, without resorting to bundling frivolous trial versions or increasing prices 30%."
Everex's Impact GC3502 is powered by a VIA's energy efficient C7-D processor that takes out an average of 2W to a maximum of 20W and has a processing speed of about 1.5 GHz. Other features of the GC3502 is a 1GB DDR2 533 MHz SDRAM, a VIA Chrome9 HC IGP graphic card, Realtek High-Definition Audio, 10/100 Ethernet LAN, 6 USB ports, Microphone and headphone jack, as well as VGA, Ethernet and RJ-11 ports. Keyboard, mouse and stereo speakers are already included.
Though not for the power user, Everex's Impact GC3502 is perfect for students who just want to finish their project and browse the web for research purposes.
"The IMPACT GC3502 is another excellent example of the productive collaboration between Everex and VIA in bringing the latest computing and communication technologies within reach of many more people," Richard Brown, VIA's Vice President of Marketing stated.
The Everex Impact GC3502 will retail for $298 and is available at all Wal-Mart stores nationwide.

Post a CommentBuying a used computer that's a few years old is still substantially cheaper, but this looks like a good deal if you really want to buy a new one. It appears to have all the features just about anyone needs, and its good to hear that they have made the power consumption lower.
If you don't buy Vista (or any operating system) you can build it yourself cheaper on new egg. Although this is still remarkably low, a great college deal for people who aren't much for DIY computer work.
Great reporting. My unfortunate kids are getting my old PC. LOL Hey, I'm going to re-do all the insides. So, don't shun me just yet. LOL OpenOffice.org is great. I don't even habe Microsoft Word on my PC anymore. It gave me so many errors, I started using OpenOffice and got hooked. I then deleted Word and the cd is probably lying in a box somewhere. What a great way to help parents get their kids PC's. A computer is such a great necessity these days. :-)
