Your probably wondering which tools can be so powerful that they have such a significant impact on your ability to use 3DS Max. In reality, they are the simplest tools you will ever use and that is, Zoom, Rotate and finally Pan. These three tools are the building blocks for anything else that you will ever do, or learn about 3DS Max. Using these three tools, you can navigate around the scene that you are creating, and also work with it to develop and create the perfect overall view so you are able to effectively see the parts of the scene that you are working on, rather than trying to simply deal with weird angles and bad positions.
The Zoom tool as it suggests from the name allows you to zoom in and out of the scene. This is useful for getting not only an up close and personal look at the scene, but also seeing it from a distance to see how others might see it as well. If you are working on doing a model replica of something that is available in physical form, this can be useful to help ensure that you are doing the scales properly as well since you will be able to zoom far enough out that viewing the entire scene is not a problem at all.
The next important tool is the Rotate tool. Using rotate in 3DS Max will allow you to actually rotate the scene that you are working with. This when used in conjunction with tools such as zoom and pan will allow you to get a view of the exact portion of the scene that you need to, without having to simply deal with some unexpected angles. Using rotate can enable you to turn the scene around in many different directions easily, and ensure that you are looking at the scene the best way.
The last essential tool is Pan. This is going to be one of the most important tools that you ever use. By utilizing the pan tool, you can actually move the scene around. This is highly useful for looking at a scene from a new angle, as well as using it in conjunction with either zoom, or rotate to get an even better angle of the scene that you are working with. Careful attention paid to the pan tool can help you to learn how to quickly and easily move all around your scene without any problems, and while still being able to work quickly and effectively in 3DS Max.
A very important consideration to keep in mind is that these three major tools also are very important for 3D applications other than just 3DS Max. Using them for programs such as ZBrush, Maya, and others is also useful, helpful and often required. As you can imagine, learning the proper usage of these tools, and knowing when it is appropriate to use them can help you to quickly and easily create the 3D projects that you want.
