The 40th Anniversary of the Release of Beatles' Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band is June 1

June 1, 2007, is an important day for Beatles fans. It is the 40th anniversary of the release of the album Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band. All around the world, various events will mark the Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band milestone.

Celebrations in England include a tribute by The Karl Lornie Band, which will dress in full Sgt. Pepper attire. BBC Radio 2 will air the "Sgt. Pepper's 40th Anniversary" special on Saturday June 2, 2007. The city of Liverpool has planned a Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band event in August. Special guests will be those with the surname Pepper who currently hold, or formerly held, the title of Sergeant. There is no word if former Beatles, Paul McCartney and Ringo Starr, will attend any of the events.

The recording was bittersweet for enthusiasts since The Beatles were semi-retired at the time of the release. The album, which took 129 days to create, was introduced in what is known as "The Summer of Love." Peter Blake, Jann Haworth, and Michael Cooper created the psychedelic cover of Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band. The life-size collage of famous people included wax figures of the Beatles themselves.

The second side of the original vinyl record of Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band also broke new ground by using the "out" portion of the vinyl (the area between the end of the last song and the label). Until Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band, this section was always blank. However, The Beatles decided to include a short audio to conclude the album, a move that pleased fans.

The cover of Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band, as well as the group, created quite a stir by printing song lyrics on the back and a controversial photo on the front. One hot topic was Adolph Hitler's raised hand behind Paul McCartney's head. (Hitler's image was hidden behind the band.) A picture of Jesus was removed after John Lennon's comment, "The Beatles are bigger than Jesus," caused a U. S. backlash. Rumors spread that the group was taking drugs while writing and recording and that the plants on the cover were actually marijuana. There were also accusations that the group used "backward masking," or subliminal messages, on the album.

Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band was an innovative album, both for the music industry and for The Beatles. From the cover to the various techniques used, the album was groundbreaking. Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band is such an icon that artists and shows, such as The Simpson's and American Idol, have paid tribute to it.

The first time you listen to Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band is a magical experience. After that, it just gets better. It is no wonder that the album is one of the best selling of all time.

Happy Anniversary, Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band! We certainly have enjoyed the show!

I just had a rupture of a water pipe that lightly damaged some album covers on old LPs. The Sgt Pepper album cover's old glue failed, causing the part of the cover opposite of the disc envelope to fail. Stuck in between the back of the cover and the inner part of the cover that does not hold the record was a really cool black and white photo of the 4 Beatles. Has anyone else found this or heard of this. Was it common practice to hide pictures/posters inside of the album covers, kind of like time capsules that would only show up if the cover came apart???

I didn't know it was that old - but I'm thinking of the movie. As a pre-teen I was begging for the vinyl in the late 70s - prohibitively priced at $25, I think. Great article.

Thanks for the article. I was wondering when Sgt. Pepper was released in 1967. I knew it was around this time of year. Your article, and the music, brings back so many great memories. I was a teenager, and it was such a cool time.
