Mentoring pertains to the relationship and bonding between a master and a pupil, something that is most often called a mentor and a protégé. A mentor is usually older, wiser, and more knowledgeable, maybe even more serene and settled. A protégés is usually known to be less wise, less knowledgeable, and flighty. Because of this, the mentor is sent to guide the inexperienced protégé and teach him or her everything that must be known to reach ultimate greatness.
This mentor-protégé relationship has been around for a very long time and has played a huge part in pop culture in today's world. Usually, for example, when an employee first enters an establishment, he or she is brought around by someone who has already been in the establishment for a longer time. New employees usually suffer from culture shock, or the unpreparedness of the new workplace, so the mentor must serve as a guide through the inner workings of the establishment, in order to make the transition much smoother for the protégé.
An existing employee might serve to be someone who could one day lead others or move on to something better. In such cases, the experienced person in the company may decide to take a new employee under his or her wing as a mentor. The mentor will then teach the protégé the essential skills needed, in order to succeed in the workplace. One day, this protégé might even become a mentor, move up the scale, and onto bigger and better things.
Coaching is quite different, as it pertains to a method, in which a leader directs all the actions of a person or group of persons. In coaching, the training and instruction are done with an ultimate goal in mind. This could include giving motivational speeches, for example. Other ways to train people to become better could be through workshops seminars, or mere practice.
While a mentor teaches a protégé how to become better in mentoring, coaching is known more as a specific method of mentoring. Here, the coach can guide his or her team to reach a certain goals.
There are many various kinds of mentoring and coaching, both of which required various specific techniques. If you wish to learn these techniques, speak with professional mentors and coaches, or simply do some research on-line.
