Indianapolis is a great place to find good deals on just about anything. Most of the major retail chains in the area offer amazing sales on holiday decorations at various times during the season. There are also unique, one-of-a-kind places in Indianapolis that carry holiday decorating items that you can't find anyplace else.

Here is my list of the best places to shop for holiday decorations in Indianapolis:

1. The Christmas Gift & Hobby Show

Each year the Christmas Gift & Hobby Show is held November 7-11 in the West Pavilion of the Indiana State Fairgrounds. This is the holiday sale of sales. Over 60,000 people attended last year, and the show now has over 350 exhibitors selling everything from holiday decorations to NASCAR items. Be ready to walk because the show spans over four acres. Not only will you find great deals on holiday decorations, but you can also find many unique gifts for family and friends.

This year you can visit the newly restored Christmas Village shops which are filled with unique gifts, sample from an array of holiday foods and locally produced wine, visit with Santa, or just sit and relax. If you can make it, this is the best place by far to shop for your your holiday decorations. You will also have a lot of fun while doing it!

2. Jo-Ann Fabric & Crafts

Jo-Ann Fabric & Crafts started out years ago as a chain of small fabric stores. Now they are a huge mega-center for everything crafts. They still carry sewing supplies, fabrics, and notions, but they also offer a huge selection of seasonal holiday decorating items. The secret to finding a good deal at Jo-Ann's is to know when they are having their sales by signing up for their newsletter.

Typically, they will raise their prices when the new holiday items first come out. After a week or so they slash the prices during one of their advertised sales. You have to get to these sales early because the items move out fast! Jo-Ann Fabric & Crafts has many locations in Indianapolis, but my favorite is the one located on the south side of Indianapolis near the Greenwood Park Mall.

3. Michaels

Michaels carries a little bit of everything. They offer a fairly large amount of unique ornaments, lights, and other ready made decorations, as well as a wide selection of materials and kits to make your own. You will also be able to find silk plants and wreaths, and even larger decorating items like custom painted tables and chairs.

Michaels is a bit pricier than Jo Ann's, but you can find good deals during their advertised sales and clearance events. Each store location has a newsletter posted on their main website with details about their sales.

4. Target Stores

Is it me or has Target evolved into an amazing store? I have been shopping at Target for years and one of the things that has always kept me coming back are the fantastic clearance sales that they have. Now, not only do they have these amazing sales, but their product line has improved dramatically.

Target always offers very unique, hip, and trendy holiday decorations. Their prices are okay during the season, but for the real deals you should buy them at the end of the season. The week after Christmas is the best time to buy your holiday decorations at Target.

Light sets are marked down to a few dollars, ornaments can be had for under a $1, and on and on. You have to go early to catch these sales because most of the decorations are gone within a few hours. I personally don't care much for the new Target Super Stores so I listed the address of my favorite non-superstore that is located in the Castleton area.

If you want to buy top-of-the line designer decorations for pennies on the dollar, go to a Target Store during one of their end of the season clearance sales!

5. Turandot Decorative Arts

With big chain stores taking over the holiday market more and more, small stores like Turandot's often get lost in the shuffle. Turandot's is however and amazing place. It is located right in the heart of Broadripple Village on Westfield Boulevard.

Turandot's sells very unusual, reasonably priced items that you will never see anywhere else. The store is small so the shopping space can be a little tight at times. Not only will you find quirky ornaments and cards, but stocking stuffers, jewelry, and gifts for even the hardest to please on your list.

If you are looking for unusual decorations and gifts this year check out Turandot's. After enjoying your time at Turandot's you can shop till you drop in the many boutiques and interesting shops in the Broadripple area.

Nice job, Kim. I also love to shop in Target over the holidays. One year, they had special games to test, battery-operated toys on display and food samples. Even if we wouldn't have bought a thing, it was like being at a free show :)
