The 5 Best Songs for the Holidays

Mike Harris
Around the Holiday season, nothing is better than a little music to get into the spirit. From Bing Crosby to the Trans-Siberian Orchestra to Mariah Carey's Christmas album, there is certainly no shortage of music to choose from. That being said, it is not all created equal. The following list is the cream of the crop, the best of the best to get into the Holiday mood.

5. John Lennon - Happy Christmas: Coming from one of the best songwriters of the modern era, it is no surprise that this one is from the heart. It has the classic late Lennon era message (All he was saying is give peace a chance) and at the same time it really captures the emotion of the season. Not to mention the great children's choir in the chorus.

4. Bing Crosby & Doris Day - Baby, It's Cold Outside: The way these two legendary artists play off of each other is nothing short of, well, legendary. Both humorous and heartwarming, this song is the epitome of romance during Christmastime.

3. Nat King Cole - The Christmas Song: When it comes to Christmas music, you can't get better or classier than Nat King Cole. This song, written classically and beautifully, points out every little thing you can think of related to, and has a way of giving you that comfortable nostalgic feeling..

2. Josh Groban - O Holy Night: This song, no matter who sings it, is a very emotionally powerful song. But when this newcomer on the Christmas music scene (especially compared to others on the list) belts out this classic, the roots of why we celebrate the holiday shine through brilliantly. It is truly a divine song for a "divine night".

1.Nat King Cole - Little Drummer Boy: There really is no other choice for the best Christmas song ever performed. Sung A Capella by Cole and an excellent background bass choir, it simply doesn't get any better than this. I dare you to try and keep that frog in your throat down when Cole and the choir hit their crescendo at the climax of the song.

So, when the tree goes up, the lights are strung, the tinsel is hung, and the halls are decked with holly, be absolutely sure to include these five classics in the soundtrack of your Holiday season. After all, isn't it hard to imagine what the season would be like without them?
