The 5 Most Slept-On Hip-Hop Albums of 2010

Just when You Thought it was Save to Sleep on Hip-Hop Forever!

AJ WOODSON
This is the time of year when every publication or everyone with an opinion for that matter starts dropping their best albums of the year. Most of the time they are filled with albums that sold a lot, albums that received a lot of radio and video airplay, and/ or a list of some of the biggest artists.

Those things do not always make an album worth of best of the year nominations. So I shall shine light on some really good hip-hop that has been overlooked. Some because of lack of promotions, some were released on independent labels and didn't have the big machine behind them. Some just fell through the cracks because of the wack joints that came out and saturated the internet, radio and video outlets.

So in an effort to educate a few and re-present to others, some great hip-hop albums you might have missed, here is my list of the 5 Most Slept- On Hip-Hop Albums Of 2010!

Before I get started...

Jay Electronica- Victory (Mixtape)
While this was actually a mixtape, this was one of the best hip-hop albums of 2010. Jay Electronica unapologetically shares his faith, his life, his struggles, his dreams and his imagination served over some of the hottest hip-hop classics of the 90's. Now that he is signed to Jay Z's Roc Nation label his fierce flow will no longer be slept on!

Now on to my list!

1. The Roots - How I Got Over (Def Jam)
Even as the best band in late night, as the house band for Late Night With Jimmy Fallon, The Roots still don't achieve the sales the talent dictates. How I Got Over might quite possibly be the greatest album of their career. If you do not have this album and call yourself a hip-hop head, Stop, Do Not Pass Go, Do Not Collect $200 and go out and get this album.

2. Freeway and Jake One - The Stimulus Package (Rhymesayers)
All I'm going to say is, Freeway's flow and Jake One's production equals real hip-hop!!!

3. Reflection Eternal - Revolutions Per Minutes (Warner Bros.)
Talib's social commentary in Ballad Of The Black Gold, which deals with the BP oil spill, reminded me what I love about hip-hop!

4. Murs & 9th Wonder - Fornever (SMC Recordings)
Words can not do this album justice; you must experience it for yourself if you love hip-hop!

5. Nas & Damian Marley - Distant Relatives (UniversalRepublic/ Def Jam)
This one needs no explanation, but I will repeat, you have to experience this for yourself

Honorable Mentions:
Kidz In The Hall - Land Of Make Believe (Duck Down)
Marco Polo - The Stupendous Adventures Of Marco Polo (Duck Down)
Nappy Roots - The Pursuit Of Nappyness (Nappy Roots Ent Grp)

Great list AJ, there are a few more artist that are not recognized in the mainstream media, living in an underground medium awaiting to be noticed by the world at large.

i would throw in wale-atttention deficit. IT was great, but for some reason, people didn't feel it.

Thanks for the insight, AJ. I slept on a lot of music in 2010. I'll be sure to check out all of these artists!

In fact all of the groups you mention have some views that do not vibe with the mainstream, and for that reason alone they will never get the airplay they deserve. Instead we are left with Jay Z and Kanye West.

Jay Electronica will continue to get slept on. I thought that the Nas/Marley collabo was killed by radio since it was political, religious, spiritual, and politically incorrect for all intensive purposes. There was no way that album would get airplay. Murs is always slept on as well, and 9th Wonder; well you see what happened to the group.
