District of Columbia Administrative Hearings Judge, Roy Pearson, is filing a lawsuit against South Korean dry-cleaner owners Jin Nam Chung, Soo Chung, and Ki Chung. The judge is representing himself and he wants an astounding $65 million for a pair of pants that were at one time missing.
Roy Pearson had disagreements with the Chungs in the past but kept returning to the dry cleaner. A pair of pants from one of his suits went missing. Roy went nuts and demanded a thousand dollars: the price of the suit. The Chungs found the pants a week later and tried to return the pants to Mr. Pearson. The Chungs refused to pay him a thousand dollars because the pants were recovered. This is when Mr. Pearson lost it. The Chungs tried to settle the dispute with offers of $3,000, $4,600, and $12,000. Pierson, being the crazed lunatic that he apparently is, wanted more money out of these immigrants who were trying to make it on their own in America. He came up with some crazy costs. This includes a $15,000 cost for having to get a rental car every weekend for the next 10 years in order to find another dry cleaner. The majority of this $65 million dollar lawsuit comes from Roy's interpretation of a District of Columbia consumer protection law that charges violators $1,500 a day for each violation. He calculated all of this for three defendants and this came up with his grand total.
The Chungs had moved here from South Korea seven years ago so they could have a better life. Mr. Pearson wants to screw this all up. The Chungs lawyer said, "They're out a lot of money, but more importantly, incredibly disenchanted with the system. This has destroyed their lives."
There has been a lot of support for the Chungs in the face of this controversy. It seems like most people agree that Roy Pearson is a huge asshole who is abusing our legal system. The Chungs lawyer added, "There has been a significant groundswell of support for the Chungs."
This is why people say our legal system is a joke. We have people in this country like Roy Pearson who want to turn justice AND sanity into a joke. The legal system is meant to punish wrong doers, not hurt people who made an honest mistake. The Chungs tried to give Mr. Pearson's pants back to him but he wanted to throw a hissy fit. Personally, I think people like Roy Pearson need to be put in jail when they ruin peoples lives just to make a point. Roy Pearson is the criminal in this case. Please Roy Pearson, just put your pants back on and drop this lawsuit.

As you are undoubtedly aware, a $54 million lawsuit was recently brought in DC District Court against a small neighborhood drycleaners over a pair of alleged lost trousers. While the Court found resoundingly in favor of the business owners, Jin and Soo Chung, their ordeal is not yet over-they have drained their saving accounts contesting this frivolous lawsuit, and they have racked up over $100,000 in legal expenses.
In order to help the Chungs defray their legal bills, ILR and the American Tort Reform Association are co-hosting a fundraiser on Tuesday evening, July 24 at 6 p.m. at the US Chamber Building in Washington, DC. Unfortunately, businesses large and small across America must deal every day with similar extortionist tactics from some plaintiffs' lawyers. The collective outcome is not justice, but lost jobs, ruined businesses and billions of dollars in lost economic opportunity. This is just insane.
