The 68th Annual Golden Globe Awards Nominations Revealed: Full List of Nominees

'King's Speech' and 'Glee' Ruled the Most Nominations to Start the Major Awards Season

Maxine Nelson
It's now official. The major awards season has begun for 2011 with the early morning announcements of the 68th Annual Golden Globe Awards Nominations by the Hollywood Foreign Press Association (HFPA). What the Academy is to the Oscars the HFPA is to the Golden Globes. They are the ones who decided the nominations and who will eventually vote for the winners. The awards presentation will be televised "live" on Sunday, January 16 hosted by Rick Gervais.

Katie Holmes, Josh Duhamel and Blair Underwood had the honors of announcing the nominees in the early morning hours of 5 a.m. Pacific Time. A total of 25 categories in film and television were revealed. Were there any snubs or surprises? Who is predicted to win?

HFPA - Hollywood Foreign Press Association

Many industry insiders and those in the media look upon the Golden Globe Awards as the precursor to the globally popular and highly prestigious Academy Awards. It basically kicks off the season of award shows for films. After World War II a number of Hollywood based journalists stationed overseas wanted to bridge the international community to films from the U.S.

The Golden Globe statue represents the countries around the world that showcase Hollywood films. Now the HFPA represents 55 countries from the most respected and esteemed publications. Currently the Golden Globes is the third most watched awards show on television.

Snubs and Surprises

One of the biggest surprises was the exclusion of Best Motion Picture - Drama, the famed western "True Grit". It features an all-star cast including last year's Golden Globe winner for Best Actor-Drama, Jeff Bridges. The Coen Brothers directed this remake. In the original it starred John Wayne. Another snub was for the film "127 Hours" about a trapped hiker who takes extreme measures to free himself. It did receive an acting nomination for the lead actor, James Franco. Many were expecting it to receive more nominations.

A big surprise was the 6 nominations received for "The Fighter", especially in the category of Best Motion Picture - Drama. On the television side the only real surprise was seeing a nomination for Scott Caan in the new CBS hit show "Hawaii Five-0." Of all the network shows that are new from the fall season "Hawaii Five-0" was the only one to get a nomination.

Who Will Win?

Once upon a time whoever won in the Best Film category, whether it was drama or comedy/musical at the Golden Globes ended up winning the Oscar in the same category. Early favorites are "Social Network" receiving 6 nominations and "King's Speech" got the most nods at 7. "Glee" received 5, the most for television. Natalie Portman for "Black Swan" is heavily favored to win Best Actress - Drama. Colin Firth in "King's Speech" is favored alongside James Franco "127 Hours" and Jesse Eisenberg "The Social Network" to win for Best Actor - Drama. One thing is certain, the Golden Globe Award presentations on TV is never dull.

How does Rexie from toy story not get a supporting actor nod. Please no wins for Alice in Wonderland,, I think Depp is a great actor, but that movie was just plain odd
