Addiction is something that ruins lives. I have an addiction personality. Addiction to alcohol ruined my life for a while. I was on a downward spiral for a few years and didn't even know it. I was taking everything to the extreme.
Addiction
If you're in addiction, often times you don't even know it. You take everything to the extreme. Addiction is something that has a way of sneaking up on you and controlling everything you do. When something becomes so obsessive with you that it's the main activity that you do during your waking hours, it usually means that you have an addiction.
Addiction To Alcohol
An addiction to alcohol, for me; became an all-consuming obsession. When your main goal every day is to get drunk, then you have an addiction. If you get drunk every single time you have a drink of alcohol, then you have an addiction. If you drink alcohol to cope with whatever life gives you, then you have an addiction. If you drink alcohol to blackout or pass out, then you have an addiction.
Forms Of Addiction

Addiction can take many forms. Some things that you can have an addiction to include the following: alcohol, sex, drugs, food, gambling, tv, adrenaline rush.
To The Extreme
The addiction personality will take everything to the extreme. I know this because I have an addiction personality. When I was drinking alcohol I knew that a little bit of alcohol was good because it made me feel good.
Corrective Action Needed
Then, my addiction personality stepped up to the plate and said," if a little bit of alcohol is good then, a lot of it; is a heck of a lot better." When the addiction personality takes over it can lead down a dark road. When the addiction personality takes over it can destroy you and lead to death if you don't take corrective action.
Moderation
In the addiction personality; the word moderation, doesn't exist. If you talk to an alcoholic about moderating their drinking, they'll say that they do moderate their drinking by drinking till they pass out. To an alcoholic, this makes perfect sense; but, to a normal person it doesn't.
Too Much
We all know that too much of a good thing, is bad for us. There has to be a balance in life. Having a balance in life consists of having a variety of things to do, instead of just doing one thing over and over.
Insanity

The definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over again, expecting a different result. Us alcoholics have a little bit of insanity in all of us. We have all too often been in the position of doing something over and over again expecting a different result every time. To get past the insanity, you have to start thinking differently.
New Thinking
If you go to AA meetings, you'll start to hear bits of the old thinking mixed in with some new thinking. Things that you haven't thought of before and before too long, you'll be thinking that makes perfect sense.
AA
www.associatedcontent.com/article/1744100/the_benefits_of_going_to_alcoholics.html
Often times, in AA; we'll laugh at our old behaviors because they seem so odd to us now that we're sober.
Repeat The Insanity
Now that we have a new way of thinking, we can live life to the fullest. The reason that the people in AA always go to meetings is that we have to be constantly reminded of the kind of hell that alcohol put us through so we don't repeat the insanity.
Relapsing
www.associatedcontent.com/article/2334428/the_embarrassment_of_an_alcohol_induced.html
The road to relapsing and starting to drink again always consists of going to fewer and fewer AA meetings. Until; finally, you're not going to any AA meetings at all. Then, the opportunity to drink again pops it little tiny head around the corner and says," come on, have a drink, it can't hurt anything and no one will know." And then, all of a sudden; you're drinking again. Life can then fall apart in a matter of days, not months or years.
Going To Fewer Meetings
When we go to fewer meetings, alcohol starts to look good to us again. We forget about all the troubles that alcohol caused us and it doesn't take long for alcohol to put us right back where we were before we stopped drinking. Often times it can be a matter of weeks or just days until we find that we're right back where we started before we stopped drinking.

Post a CommentWell done; as a family member of an alcoholic, everything you said rang true...for alcoholics the concept of "just one" is non-existent.
Truer words were never said. I know people who have been sober for over 20 years that went back out. When asked what happened, they would say. I quit going to meetings. Excellent article.
Another well written and personal piece, thanks.
