The Admiral at the Lake is Chicago's most established non-profit organization that has been dedicated solely to senior citizens since 1858. On November 30, 2010, a groundbreaking ceremony took place to herald its redevelopment. The anticipated 31 story high rise building and an apartment building will replace the eleven story hotel that was built in 1920. The project is anticipated to cost $145 million and is set to be built at the location of the Admiral's former retirement community. The current location of the facility is at Foster and Marine Drive in the Edgewater neighborhood.
Future community members have committed themselves for a large portion of the independent living apartments with $202 million financing that was completed in November of 2010. This continuing care retire community is based upon the collaboration of The Kendal Corporation and the Admiral at the Lake. This is the first time that The Kendal Corporation is investing in Chicago, and is a non-for-profit corporation.
