The Advantages and Disadvantages of Traveling Alone

Brittney Stewart
Though some of you may never dream of it, traveling alone is extremely common and can make the entire traveling experience more enjoyable. Being out in the world, with no set time limits, nothing to hold you back from exploring the world, and finding yourself in glorious new landscapes, nothing compares. Of course traveling alone does not necessarily mean staying away from other people. In fact, it is not uncommon for several lone travelers to form groups for short periods of time.

Advantages of Lone Traveling

1. You only have yourself to please! Meaning you can get up when you want, go out when you want, and move on when you are ready.

2. The entire travel budget goes to you. Whatever you want to spend it on.

3. Free yourself up to be more adventurous! Take risks, meet the locals, and don't worry about the stress of pleasing other people. Take your time and enjoy it.

Disadvantages of Lone Traveling

1. While you are saving money by paying for yourself only. Lone traveling can also be expensive if you have nobody to split the cost with.

2. Safety. It is always easier to have an extra set of eyes, to watch the luggage and double check to make sure nothing gets left behind.

3. Loneliness can also be a problem. Being in a city or country that you have never been, and knowing nobody can be a bit overwhelming.

Safety While Traveling

There are a few things you need to remember when you are traveling alone. Always keep extra cash stashed someplace in case of an emergency. Get to know the locals, especially if you are staying in a place that makes you uncomfortable. Also use your gut instincts, if something feels off about the place, move on, there are plenty of places to stay. And finally, try to plan your arrivals for the daytime; it can be dangerous arriving at night in a place you are unfamiliar with.

I like how you mentioned the advantages and disadvantages in your article. I don't mind travelling alone. When I go home to the UK to see my family and friends I do not mind being alone, but I know I would probably prefer it if my husband could join me. Perhaps next time!
