When in a group overall conversation becomes easier because there are more things to take about due to the amount of people that are talking. For example your friend might start talking about cars and both you and he can discuss this issue. In one-on-one dates cars wouldn't normally be on the list of topics to discuss. People clam up when put on the spot.

In a one-on-one date most of the conversation focuses on the relationship the two people are developing and this can be stressful. Even if you are talking about past relationships people are still attempting to gather information about each other and their prospects. No matter where the conversation goes the conversation keeps relating back to the relationship.

Double dating also helps to protect the parties from mischief and wrong doing. With the availability of date rape drugs, predators and people who don't have a concept of manners a double date will reduce the chance that something negative will happen. Both you and your partner can look out for each other.

In a double date it would be perfectly acceptable to meet at the place you are going to hang out. You and your friend can drive together and her and her friend can take a separate car and can meet you. Therefore, if you don't like the date you can cut it short and get out. You and your buddy can do something else for fun.
