The Advantages of Online Marketing

Eric Bailey
Marketing is an essential component for any successful business. It is a simple day-to-day fact that if an organization wants to sell a product or service, then people must know about that product or service. If they are not aware of it, they cannot buy it, no matter how cheap or amazing it is.

Thus, companies spend budget dollars every year on advertising and promotions in order to make their offerings visible. Nowadays, in a fast-paced world of online shopping and digital data overload, many are looking to the web and wondering: What are the benefits of internet marketing?

Worldwide

Perhaps the most prominent gain that internet marketing achieves is the basic fact that anyone with an internet connection can access a business's website.

With cheaper netbooks being created, smartphones with connection capability, and the advances of wi-fi that include municipal networks, this point of contact is becoming easier and easier.

A business with a viable marketing gameplan can take advantage of this and place their goods and services in front of a planet-wide audience, setting up for many millions more potential customers.

This is in stark contract to traditional advertising avenues such as radio, print ads, flyer distribution, and others that stick to one specific geographical area.

Cost-effective

There is, of course, no perfect form of promotion or advertising that can guarantee a sale upon viewing. If there were a magical formula for ad copy that directly resulted in increased sales, or if one certain method were markedly better than others, then every company on Earth would flock to it.

Then again, maybe that would render it oversaturated and bring everyone back to square one. In the end, organizations are left with imperfect options. They may spend thousands of dollars on a television commercial, only to show no real increase in awareness or revenue.

They may put out thirty thousand flyers with a coupon attached, but then only see two of them returned and not even make up the cost of printing.

One of the benefits of internet marketing, though, is that is can be very cheap. In fact, many effective tools are free: A Twitter account for customers to subscribe to, forming a Facebook page to post updates on, placing product demos on YouTube, updating the company website to reflect current virtual trends, forming an e-mail list, etc.

Then, even the pay-for-play options can be cost-effective; for instance, many affiliate programs or AdSense only pay if an ad is clicked. In other words, you may pay to have a flyer get printed but it is never seen; with the internet, you have the option to only pay if someone looks at your advertisement and uses it to get to your website.

Dynamic

People are incredibly creative and innovative when it comes to every single little niche in marketing. Promotions may be huge events that become a cultural touchstone, or advertisements may break new ground in technical achievement.

Even business cards have the option to be three-dimensional pop-ups with gold-embossed logos and a glossy finish on 80-pound stock in full color.

But even those fancy business cards are not animated, and to make them each play recorded sound would no longer be cost-effective. However, with the internet, consumers can interact with businesses in ways not seen in prior generations.

Websites have movies, downloads, interactive media sections, social networking integration, and more. No newspaper ad can play a video, and no flyer can offer a free .mp3.

Human beings are still discovering new ways to allow the benefits of internet marketing to enable further interaction, and forward-thinking businesses will be the ones to reap the most significant rewards.

After all, internet marketing is just another tool in the toolbox for a company's total marketing package. Just as careful, conscientious decisions should be made when pursuing any other form of promotion or advertisement, so to should the internet be approached.
