Many insurance companies offer camera and photographic equipment insurance, and other specialize specifically in insurance for photographers. It is not necessary to seek out the specialists and, in many cases, those providers are slightly more expensive than general insurance dealers. It is possible specialists offer better service, but not always the case. Investigate any insurer you may consider before the policy is purchased. There are a variety of websites that rate insurers or you could speak to your regular insurance agent, if you have one. It is possible to tack your camera and equipment onto any home owners or renters policy, but those often do not offer the same level of coverage or service a dedicated photography equipment insurance policy would offer.
Photography equipment insurance is a necessity for any professional photographer who earns a significant portion of income through the lens. For the amateur photographer there is also camera insurance, which can help ease the heartbreak of losing that camera. Most policies cover damage, theft, and accidental loss as well as all the equipment needed to produce photos (printers, cases, tripod, etc.). There are exclusions as well as certain conditions the policy may require. For example, some policies require that cameras kept in automobiles must be kept out of sight, or do not cover travel outside of the UK for more than 60 days.
Breakdown insurance is another wise choice for photographers, both professional and amateur. There are several benefits to acquiring camera breakdown insurance. With this type of insurance repairs and the search for a good repair person are taken care of. Many insurers deal with specific repair shops and so the insurer is able to offer a further discounted price than what an individual without insurance would be able to find. The better companies also offer a "new for old" program in which, should the camera become irreparably damaged, the camera will be replaced with one of equal functionality.
Photographic equipment insurance is a wise idea for any person for whom the camera is a treasured possession, or one that would be hard to repair and replace. However, thoroughly read any policy and examine any insurer before purchase and do not be afraid to shop around for the best protection at the best price.
